It seems like the Las Vegas Raiders will have quarterback Aidan O'Connell available for Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars after he missed Monday's loss to the Atlanta Falcons with a bone bruise in his knee.
On Tuesday, head coach Antonio Pierce said O'Connell is "trending upwards to playing this week," per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Injuries at the quarterback position are nothing new for the 2024 Raiders, as Gardner Minshew is sidelined for the rest of the season with a broken collarbone.
That left Desmond Ridder under center against the Falcons, and he responded by going 23-of-39 for 208 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in a 15-9 loss. The offense struggled for much of the contest and was unable to take advantage of a solid showing from the Las Vegas defense.
O'Connell will presumably start against the Jaguars if he is available, although that has not exactly been a recipe for success this season either.
He is 0-4 as a starter in 2024 after going a solid but unspectacular 5-5 during the 2023 campaign. Nobody confused O'Connell for a surefire franchise quarterback last season, but he at least had 12 touchdown passes to seven interceptions and kept the offense afloat.
By comparison, he has four touchdown passes to three interceptions this season and has been unable to lead the team to a win.
Just when it seemed like he was building momentum with 340 passing yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions in a Week 13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, he had just 104 passing yards, zero touchdowns and one interception in the Week 14 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before suffering the injury.
At this point, Las Vegas is simply playing out the string on a lost season.
Still, a game against the 3-11 Jaguars gives the 2-12 Raiders the rare opportunity to pick up a win. If O'Connell returns and plays like he did in his most recent outing against the Chiefs, perhaps his team can end its 10-game losing streak.
