The hot stove is scorching.
The MLB landscape already feels reshaped by the offseason, and yet there are still so many moves to be made.
With several impact free agents left on the market, let's dig into the latest buzz surrounding some of baseball's best unsigned stars.
Deep Market for Corbin Burnes?
Corbin Burnes is one of the best starting pitchers in baseball. If you don't want to take our word for it, just scan through his resume and you'll see all kinds of evidence.
He's been an All-Star in each of the past four seasons and a top-10 finisher in Cy Young voting during each of the past five. He even captured the award in 2021, and all he's done in the three years since is pitch to a 3.08 ERA with 624 strikeouts and a 1.04 WHIP over 590 innings.
It's no wonder, then, to hear Burnes reportedly has "a half-dozen teams showing significant interest," per Jon Heyman of the New York Post. There have been rumblings lately of either the Toronto Blue Jays or San Francisco Giants being the favorites to sign Burnes, but clearly his list of landing spots runs beyond that pair.
The Blue Jays could make things interesting by offering Burnes a not insignificant amount of the money they had optimistically earmarked for Juan Soto, but the Giants feel like they can get this done. They've already seen new chief decision maker Buster Posey reel in one prominent free agent (Willy Adames, who played with Burnes in Milwaukee), and they should be eager to add an ace to pair with Logan Webb atop their rotation.
Prediction: Burnes signs with San Francisco.
Yankees Focused on Alex Bregman?
If there was any consolation prize for the Yankees coming up short in the Juan Soto sweepstakes, it's that they could invest that money elsewhere and potentially fill multiple needs.
They've already signed one of this offseason's top starting pitchers in Max Fried, and it now sounds like their sights are set on two-time All-Star and two-time World Series champ Alex Bregman.
The Yankees are expected "to put on a full-court press" to sign him, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, which would bump Jazz Chisholm Jr. over to second base.
Nightengale interpreted Houston's recent trade of Kyle Tucker, which brought back third baseman Isaac Paredes among others, as a signal that "the Astros have given up on their pursuit of re-signing Bregman." Bregman could be there for New York's taking, and while his offensive numbers have come down a bit, he's still a Gold Glove defender who's an annual threat for 25-plus homers and triple-digit RBI.
Prediction: Yankees sign Bregman.
Astros Eyeing Nolan Arenado?
Nolan Arenado has three years and $74 million left on his contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. He is nowhere near reaching free agency, in other words.
He could, however, impact the free agent market, as St. Louis has been shopping him around. Making him even more significant for this free agency is that the Houston Astros have emerged as a "serious suitor" for him, per The Athletic's Chandler Rome.
Arenado, of course, plays third base, or the same position as Alex Bregman. So, if Houston is really focused on bringing Arenado in, it's probably not as focused—or maybe not focused at all—on bringing Bregman back.
It's possible the Astros are doing their due diligence in case Bregman moves on, but between this interest and the recent arrival of Isaac Paredes, it sure feels like Bregman's time in Houston is finished.
Prediction: Astros replace Bregman with Nolan Arenado, who waives his no-trade clause to get to Houston.
