Patrick Mahomes Suffers Injury Scare as NFL Fans Praise Chiefs' Big Win over Browns

Scott Polacek

The Kansas City Chiefs have moved one step closer to clinching the No. 1 seed in the AFC.

Kansas City extended its winning streak to four and improved to 13-1 with a 21-7 victory over the Cleveland Browns in Sunday's AFC showdown at Huntington Bank Field. Patrick Mahomes threw for two touchdowns, but he limped off the field and had his ankle taped in the fourth quarter.

Head coach Andy Reid turned to Carson Wentz with the game in hand, but it was still a worrisome moment for the AFC West leaders.

Unlike the Chiefs, Cleveland is playing out the string of a lost season and fell to 3-11 with its third loss in a row. The Browns had no chance against a locked in Kansas City defense that forced six turnovers and finished with five sacks.

Social media praised the effort from the defensive unit:

Considering the Chiefs face three teams in playoff position in the Houston Texans, Pittsburgh Steelers and Denver Broncos to finish the regular season, it was important from their perspective to take care of business in their final contest against a team that is significantly overmatched on paper.

And they wasted no time capitalizing on an early Browns' mistake, as James Proche II lost a fumble on a punt to set the visitors up with a short field. Mahomes found JuJu Smith-Schuster for the opening score to set the tone in a rather ugly first half that featured seven combined punts, a Jameis Winston interception to Bryan Cook and a turnover on downs for Cleveland.

Harrison Butker also missed a chip-shot field goal, although the Chiefs still took a 14-0 lead into halftime thanks to Mahomes buying time with his legs in the red zone and eventually finding Noah Gray for his second touchdown pass of the game.

Halftime did nothing to change the pattern of Cleveland mistakes and timely plays by the Chiefs, as Winston threw an interception to Nick Bolton on the first possession of the third quarter. The home team parlayed that into a touchdown when Xavier Worthy took a lateral 21 yards for a score.

Things continued to get worse for the Browns, as Nick Chubb lost a fumble and was then ruled out with a foot injury while the offensive line continued to struggle to protect Winston.

The second half seemed like it was largely a formality, although the Browns finally built some momentum when Jerome Ford broke free for a 62-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to two scores in the third quarter.

But, as was the case for much of the game, the Kansas City defense put a stop to it.

Just when it seemed like Cleveland would pull within a score, Winston threw yet another interception. This time it was to Trent McDuffie in the end zone that all but ended his team's comeback chances.

Kansas City surely wasn't thrilled with the offensive performance, especially since Mahomes limped off after he was under constant pressure. Still, its defense looks ready for a championship run ahead of a difficult closing stretch to the season.
