The 2024 international signing period closed on Sunday, Dec. 15, marking the end of another window of new international prospects entering the professional baseball ranks.
Atlanta Braves shortstop Jose Perdomo and San Diego Padres shortstop Leodalis De Vries ended up securing the two largest bonuses at $5 million and $4.2 million, respectively, and there were 10 total prospects who received a bonus of $2 million or higher.
Ahead we've provided some early grades on the performance of those 10 high-priced international pickups based on their production in their pro debuts. Most prospects began their career in the Dominican Summer League, which is the equivalent of stateside rookie ball, though the aforementioned De Vries jumped straight to Single-A.
The 2025 international signing period begins on Jan. 15, which will bring with it a flurry of activity, but for now it's time to slap a bow on the 2024 window.
Before we take a deeper dive into the 10 biggest bonus recipients, let's start with a quick look at some of the early standouts who landed a bonus of less than $2 million.
Other Early Standouts
OF Eduardo Beltre, Minnesota Twins (Age: 18)
Bonus: $1,497,500
2024 Stats: 43 G, .326/.453/.618, 20 XBH (11 HR), 36 RBI, 10 SB
A future corner outfielder with a power-over-contact approach, Beltre made plenty of loud contact in his pro debut. He could fly up prospect rankings with a similar showing against stateside competition in Single-A.
SS Jesus Made, Milwaukee Brewers (Age: 17)
Bonus: $950,000
2024 Stats: 51 G, .331/.458/.554, 21 XBH (6 HR), 28 RBI, 28 SB
Made was recently ranked as the No. 1 prospect in the Brewers' farm system heading into the 2025 season by Baseball America. Outside his gaudy surface-level stats in the Dominican Summer League, he also logged far more walks (39) than strikeouts (28) over 216 plate appearances.
SS Emil Morales, Los Angeles Dodgers (Age: 18)
Bonus: $1,897,500
2024 Stats: 46 G, .342/.478/.691, 25 XBH (14 HR), 46 RBI, 12 SB
With a projectable 6'3", 191-pound frame and a 55-hit, 55-power profile, Morales has one of the highest offensive ceilings in the 2024 class. He has quickly emerged as a top 10 prospect in a deep Dodgers system.
C Rainiel Rodriguez, St. Louis Cardinals (Age: 17)
Bonus: $300,000
2024 Stats: 41 G, .346/.462/.683, 25 XBH (10 HR), 38 RBI, 1 SB
An offensive-minded catcher with 60-grade power, Rodriguez has a chance to be one of the steals of the 2024 class, though his work behind the plate is still extremely raw.
10. OF Bralyn Brazoban, Pittsburgh Pirates
Age: 18
Bonus: $2,000,000
2024 Stats: 45 G, .155/.276/.210, 6 XBH (0 HR), 16 RBI, 10 SB
With a smooth left-handed swing, a wiry frame and good athleticism that serves him well in center field, Bralyn Brazoban has a high ceiling both offensively and defensively.
His hit tool and bat-to-ball skills were lauded prior to beginning his pro career, though he hit just .155 with 61 strikeouts and a 35.1 percent strikeout rate in the Dominican Summer League after signing.
Grade: D
9. SS Joswa Lugo, Los Angeles Angels
Age: 17
Bonus: $2,300,000
2024 Stats: 53 G, .301/.370/.466, 19 XBH (8 HR), 37 RBI, 18 SB
Joswa Lugo has quickly emerged as one of the top prospects in the Los Angeles Angels' farm system thanks to a strong showing in the Dominican Summer League.
He has a good approach at the plate and plenty of present power with significant projection remaining in his 6'3", 187-pound frame. There is a good chance he will outgrow shortstop, but he has the power profile to be a good fit at the hot corner.
Grade: A
8. SS Yandel Ricardo, Kansas City Royals
Age: 18
Bonus: $2,397,500
2024 Stats: 45 G, .213/.330/.366, 15 XBH (2 HR), 23 RBI, 14 SB
The numbers don't jump off the page, but 25 walks against 34 strikeouts in 196 plate appearances speak to Yandel Ricardo having a plan at the plate and the potential for a quality hit tool.
He has the defensive tools to stay at shortstop, but could also outgrow the position and shift to third base, which would put more pressure on the development of his bat. His intangibles and leadership ability also help raise his ceiling.
Grade: C
7. OF Victor Hurtado, Washington Nationals
Age: 17
Bonus: $2,700,000
2024 Stats: 39 G, .218/.310/.331, 9 XBH (3 HR), 22 RBI, 3 SB
With an athletic 6'3" frame and significant offensive upside, Victor Hurtado has been on the radar of MLB teams for years, and he was one of the youngest players in the 2024 international crop, turning 17 in May.
His swing can get long at times, so he will need to tighten things up to avoid being exposed against more advanced pitching, but he has as much power potential as any prospect in his class.
Grade: C
6. OF Adolfo Sanchez, Cincinnati Reds
Age: 18
Bonus: $2,700,000
2024 Stats: 45 G, .216/.356/.345, 11 XBH (2 HR), 18 RBI, 11 SB
With a 60-grade hit tool and a compact left-handed stroke, Adolfo Sanchez is one of the more advanced hitters in the 2024 class, and he has gap power to all fields that could develop into more as his 6'1", 185-pound frame matures.
He has the quickness and instincts to stick in center field, which would further elevate his profile, though his hit tool will be his ticket to an everyday role in the big leagues years down the line.
Grade: C
5. C Yovanny Rodriguez, New York Mets
Age: 18
Bonus: $2,850,000
2024 Stats: 44 G, .219/.359/.356, 13 XBH (2 HR), 25 RBI, 4 SB
With advanced defensive tools behind the plate and the requisite leadership ability required to thrive at the position, Yovanny Rodriguez has a chance to develop into one of the best international catching prospects in years.
He has a 55-grade hit tool and tallied almost as many walks (30) as strikeouts (34) over 181 plate appearances in his pro debut. Even with average offensive skills, his defensive profile gives him a high floor as a potential everyday backstop.
Grade: B
4. SS Dawel Joseph, Seattle Mariners
Age: 17
Bonus: $3,300,000
2024 Stats: 47 G, .133/.274/.173, 6 XBH (0 HR), 2 RBI, 3 SB
The Seattle Mariners have enjoyed significant success on the international market in recent years. They found a legitimate star in Julio Rodríguez, two extremely valuable trade chips in Noelvi Marte and Edwin Arroyo, and currently have high-ceiling prospects Felnin Celesten and Lazaro Montes as part of one of the deepest systems in baseball.
Despite a rocky start to his pro career, Dawel Joseph has the tools to join that conversation. He has a power-over-contact offensive approach and he is still searching for a clean fit defensively, but his power potential and projectable 6'2", 185-pound frame give him significant upside.
Grade: D
3. SS Fernando Cruz, Chicago Cubs
Age: 17
Bonus: $4,000,000
2024 Stats: 25 G, .215/.326/.329, 5 XBH (2 HR), 12 RBI, 11 SB
The $4 million bonus the Chicago Cubs gave to shortstop Fernando Cruz was the second-largest international bonus handed out in franchise history, behind only the $6 million given to Jorge Soler as part of his $30 million contract.
Despite a lanky 5'11", 155-pound frame, Cruz generates good exit velocity thanks to his elite bat speed, and his power should only improve as he adds strength. He checks all the present boxes to remain at shortstop, with quick-twitch athleticism and a strong arm.
Grade: C
2. SS Leodalis De Vries, San Diego Padres
Age: 18
Bonus: $4,200,000
2024 Stats: 75 G, .238/.361/.442, 36 XBH (11 HR), 38 RBI, 13 SB
For the second year in a row, the San Diego Padres took an aggressive approach with their top international signing, bringing Leodalis De Vries stateside and sending him right to Single-A Lake Elsinore to begin his pro career similar to how they handled catching prospect Ethan Salas.
De Vries handled the challenge in stride, holding his own against significantly older competition while gaining invaluable experience. With a 55-hit, 55-power, 60-speed offensive profile, he has the potential to be a star, and he was all the way up to No. 25 on B/R's final Top 100 prospect list of 2024.
Grade: A
1. SS Jose Perdomo, Atlanta Braves
Age: 18
Bonus: $5,000,000
2024 Stats: 8 G, .250/.318/.250, 0 XBH (0 HR), 0 RBI, 2 SB
A hamstring injury limited Jose Perdomo to just eight games in his pro debut after he signed the largest bonus of the 2024 international period, accounting for $5 million of the Atlanta Braves total $5.284 million bonus pool.
One of the best pure hitters in the 2024 class and a sure-fire shortstop at the next level, Perdomo has a compact swing that should allow him to hit for a high batting average and gap power, though it remains to be seen how much over-the-fence pop he will produce with a 5'11", 180-pound frame.
Grade: C
