NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says the league is conducting "analysis" regarding potential expansion to an 18-game regular season, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
"We are doing analysis I would say, but we are not finalizing any plans at this point," Goodell said, per Pelissero.
Goodell said the NFL's conclusions would be shared with the NFLPA, which must approve any schedule changes.
The league's current collective bargaining agreement with the players' union expires in March 2031. The previous CBA allowed the league to expand from 16 to 17 regular-season games ahead of the 2021 campaign.
The expansion to 17 games also coincided with a reduction of the preseason from four to three games.
When first addressing potential expansion in an April appearance on the Pat McAfee Show, Goodell indicated that an 18-game regular season would be preceded by just two preseason games.
That expanded schedule would see the regular season begin around Labor Day and match up the Super Bowl with President's Day.
"We think that's a good trade: less preseason games and more regular-season games. I think most anybody would think that was beneficial," Goodell said in May, per NFL.com.
Goodell then said in November that he would like to see this schedule change take place "within five years," per Ben Fischer of the Sports Business Journal.
Of players surveyed about the potential schedule expansion by ESPN ahead of the 2024 season, 19 percent were "completely against" the idea, while eight percent were completely for the expansion, according to ESPN's Brooke Pryor.
Of the remainder, 46 percent of surveyed players voted in favor of an 18-game schedule with some stipulations, per Pryor. Players could ask for concessions including a more favorable revenue split, additional money for the extra game and potentially an additional bye week in exchange for the 18th game.
Even a narrow player majority could move through the next CBA. The last contract was ratified in March 2020 by a margin of just 60 votes.
