Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones believes Bill Belichick's coaching career is far from over despite the former New England Patriots leader taking the 2024 season off from the NFL.
"I don't know that I've seen a coach available, if you will, with his stature. He's got a lot of gas left in his tank, a lot," Jones said in a Tuesday appearance of 105.3 The Fan (23:00 mark of Shan and RJ.) "He's on the game. He's savvy. He knows the personnel all over the league. There's no learning curve there."
Jones continued: "It doesn't surprise me that everything there is out here that's got a coach concept associated with it that he's not being considered. Bill Belichick could run a major company, very effectively. He's just has that leadership ability, as well as in this case, no one knows more football or how to execute it and use that to win a ball game than Bill Belichick."
ESPN has reported that Belichick, 72, is speaking with UNC about a possible role as head coach of the Tar Heels. He last coached during his final season with the Patriots in 2023.
Belichick discussed what he would want his potential job with the Tar Heels to look like in a Monday appearance on the Pat McAfee Show.
"If I was in a college program, the college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for the players who had the ability to play in the NFL... It would be an NFL program at a college level," Belichick said on Monday.
Belichick emphasized that the discussion was, at least at this point, only theoretical.
There is still a chance Belichick could return to the NFL. He reportedly received interest from the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles ahead of the 2024 season, although both teams ultimately went with other candidates.
There is likely to be another slate of head coaching openings after the 2024 season.
The New York Jets, New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears are currently operating under interim head coaches. There is potential for another opening in Dallas, where Jones has indicated the team could decide to move on from head coach Mike McCarthy after the season.
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson is also reportedly in the hot seat, and CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones recently reported that sources say Jacksonville is "the most obvious stop" for Belichick.
The former Patriots leader could ultimately decide to turn down the North Carolina job in the hopes of holding out for an NFL position after the 2024 season. ESPN's Pete Thamel and Chris Low reported on Monday that "some type of resolution either way expected this week" between Belichick and UNC.
