After taking home a gold medal at the Paris Olympics this past summer, Jamaican discus thrower Roje Stona is gearing up to try his hand at a new sport.

According to ESPN's Tom Hamilton, Stona will be among the 14 hopefuls who try out for the NFL through its International Player Pathway program.

In addition to his triumph at the Paris Olympics with an Olympic-record throw of 70 meters, Stona also starred on the track and field team at the University of Arkansas. He previously explored the possibility of playing football by participating in Arkansas football's pro day in March and minicamps with the New Orleans Saints and Green Bay Packers this past spring. Hamilton noted that he was contacted shortly after his gold medal win and offered a chance to participate in the 10-week IPP program.

Per Hamilton, scouts who saw Stona in action at the pro day said he had the skills to try out both as a defensive end and tight end.

"After the Olympics, [the IPP] reached out again. I was like, 'Yo, the door's open' again," Stona told ESPN's Alexis Nunes. "Of course, I'ma take it. At the Olympics, I won gold, got a record. And after that offseason, they approached me again, so I took up the opportunity."

Since the IPP program was established in 2017, 41 NFL players have signed with teams. This season, there are five players on active rosters, most notably Philadelphia Eagles offensive tackle and former professional rugby player Jordan Mailata.

Stona left the door open for a potential return to the discus, but he said his priority is to turn some heads during IPP camp when it begins in Florida next month. He will be joined by Australian rugby star Jordan Petaia and athletes from Fiji, France, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and Zimbabwe.

"It is a lot of variables. A lot of things can happen in a few months, you know what I mean?" Stona said. "So it's hard to put opinion on what's going to happen, but obviously I'm going to take it a step at a time. First, I'm going to make sure I try to go through this camp successfully."
