Oregon hasn't lost yet in the 2024 season, so it's no surprise that they are the opening betting favorites to win the expanded College Football Playoff.
The Ducks (+320) are the favorites to run the field, per the opening odds from DraftKings Sportsbook, following by Georgia (+380), Texas (+400), Ohio State (+450) and Penn State.
Boise State (+5000) comes in with the longest odds among the field.
Oregon has aced every test thus far, with wins over playoff teams in Boise State, Ohio State and Penn State. That makes them the safest bet, though they also received a tough draw, having to face either Ohio State or Tennessee in the quarterfinals.
Texas may be a popular bet as well from the No. 5 seed after drawing Clemson in the first round and facing Arizona State in the quarterfinals if it advances. That's probably the cleanest path to the semifinals outside of perhaps only No. 6 seed Penn State, which faces SMU in the first round and would take on Boise State in the quarterfinals.
Granted, Texas would potentially have to face Oregon in the semifinals, so the Longhorns hardly have an unimpeded path to the title.
Ditto for Penn State, which would potentially be facing Georgia in the semifinals should it advance that far, though Notre Dame or Indiana could also be awaiting.
Oddsmakers clearly see Ohio State as a potential sleeping giant. The Buckeyes lost to Oregon by just a point and would have had a shot at the rematch in the Big Ten title game had they not lost to Michigan by a field goal to close out the regular season.
But Ohio State also has wins over Penn State and Indiana, making it one just three teams with multiple wins over teams in the CFP. (The others are the aforementioned Oregon and Georgia, with its pair of victories over Texas alongside wins against Tennessee and Clemson).
But the past is now meaningless. The beauty of an expanded playoff is that the national championship will truly be decided on the field amongst the best teams in the country.
