Thursday's game between the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers game got off to an unusual start when a fan from the group carrying the American flag for the national anthem ran to the Green Bay sideline and taunted players before being confronted by Packers head coach Matt LaFleur.
As a result, the fan says he was asked to leave the game before halftime.
The Lions fan, a season-ticket holder, said it wasn't the first time he had done something like that.
"The moment — I got caught up in it," the fan said. "I do feel a little bit like I may have embarrassed some fans and maybe the organization and stuff. But that is not my intentions at all. I absolutely love the team and, yeah, I'm sad that it worked out this way. But I'm glad we got the win. I'm glad we got the win. We swept them. That's two."
LaFleur was taken aback by the fan's outburst, doing his best to calm the situation while also calling for improved security on the field moving forward.
"I've never been a part of something like that," LaFleur said after the game, per Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. "He was talking junk to our players, giving them the throat slash sign, I'm trying to de-escalate it and then he gets in my face. I thought it was pretty unsportsmanlike. I've never seen that. I've been on many fields and usually they police that much better. I thought it was an arrogant fan that wanted to get in part of the action, and I would like to see security or something step in there and get him out of there. Because he shouldn't be doing that."
Season-ticket holders are offered a perk for the season and the fan chose to carry out the flag with his wife.
"We're about, 5-10 yards from the sideline just kind of looking at all the players," the fan told Ruta Ulcinaite of WXYZ Detroit. "Definitely letting them know, 'You're going down. You're done. It's over. Let them know we're going to beat you two times, once at home (and) once here – two times,' and he didn't like that."
There has been no word on whether the fan will face further repercussions or restrictions in terms of attending future Lions games.
