Jayson Tatum posted a 34-point, 10-rebound double-double and Jaylen Brown scored 25 points to lead the Boston Celtics to a 111-105 home win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday evening.
This was an intense, competitive and back-and-forth affair in which neither team held a double-digit lead at any point.
In the end, Tatum and Brown's efforts—coupled with Al Horford and Jrue Holiday's key buckets down the stretch—gave Boston the win.
Tatum, who scored 14 of his 34 points in the fourth quarter, shot 12-of-20 and added five assists as well.
Tatum also hit a four-point play to cap back-to-back threes to start the fourth:
Meanwhile, Brown scored 12 first-quarter points to get Boston going.
This was the Celtics and Bucks' first game since Giannis Antetokounmpo pulled back a handshake on Brown during Boston's 113-107 road win over Milwaukee on Nov. 10.
"Giannis is a child," Brown told reporters after that game. "I'm just focused on helping my team get a win, and that's what we did."
Brown did just that Friday while ratcheting up the intensity on both ends.
He also got a technical for taunting Giannis after crossing him over for a third-quarter layup. After the game, C's head coach Joe Mazzulla credited Brown for that moment, saying it gave the team an "edge."
This was ultimately a tense game with a playoff atmosphere—perhaps a preview of a 2025 postseason tilt—that went down to the final minute.
Milwaukee took a 101-100 lead after a dunk Damian Lillard (31 points) with 2:49 left, but Tatum responded one of his own.
Horford and Holiday then made big plays down the stretch.
Horford hit the game's biggest shot, knocking in a three with 1:29 left for a 105-101 edge.
Antetokounmpo later hit one-of-two free throws en route to his 30-point, 11-rebound double-double.
After the teams traded empty possessions, Holiday responded with an off-balance two-pointer with 26 seconds remaining for a 107-102 lead.
The Bucks hung around, though. Khris Middleton, who was making his season debut after rehabbing from surgeries on both ankles, got fouled from behind the three-point line and hit all his free throws with 24 seconds left.
Holiday, however, hit two free throws for a four-point lead in response. A turnover led to a final Horford two-pointer, and that was the ballgame.
The scorching-hot Celtics received much postgame praise, with Tatum and Brown leading the way.
The 19-4 Celtics, who have won three straight and 10 of 11, will now host the Memphis Grizzlies on Saturday evening.
