The Eagles have come a long way in a year. Last season, the team started 10-1 before an epic meltdown, losing five of their final six games in the regular season, which preceded a 32-9 blowout loss against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card Round.

That left Nick Sirianni planted firmly on the hot seat, though he was ultimately retained and replaced both of his coordinators, with Kellen Moore getting the nod on the offensive side of the ball and Vic Fangio on the defensive side.

And then it was time for Howie Roseman to cook, and he responded by adding Saquon Barkley, Bryce Huff, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, Zack Baun and Mekhi Becton in free agency and Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean in the NFL draft.

Most of those moves proved to be brilliant. Barkley has arguably been the best offensive player in the sport this season and Becton has ably stepped into the vacancy at guard and helped solidify the team's offensive line as one the truly elite units in the sport.

Defensively, Huff has been something of a letdown, but Gardner-Johnson has been steady, Baun has been a revelation at linebacker and Mitchell and DeJean look like stars in the making, turning a secondary that was the team's biggest weakness a season ago into a strength.

In general, the defense has been fantastic, and the Eagles have been one of the hottest teams in football since a shaky 2-2 start. Because the defense is so improved—and because Jalen Hurts has cut down on his turnovers from a year ago and the Eagles are able to bludgeon teams with the running game, steadily wearing them down—the Birds of 2024 don't have the feel of a team likely to replicate the meltdown of a year ago.

Time will tell. But Philly feels like one of the true Super Bowl contenders this season.
