The Golden State Valkyries have their jersey.
The 2025 WNBA expansion team revealed the jerseys they will wear during their first season in the league on Thursday. The white and black designs have purple detailing, as well as the logo and the entirety of "Golden State Valkyries" written on the front.
Golden State called it "a design rooted in Bay Area pride and Valkyries strength, symbolizing the fluidity, motion, and unity that shaped us."
A press release explained the white uniform is the WNBA Nike Heroine Edition, which is "designed to symbolize strength, empowerment, and courage." The black uniform is the WNBA Nike Explorer Edition.
"The uniform features the team's global logo, which highlights the Bay Bridge, with the suspension cables reimagined as wings, a powerful symbol of the Valkyries' fierce identity," the press release read.
"The five triangles formed within the wings represent the five players facing off on each side of the court, while the thirteen lines extending from the top of the sword, which also doubles as the bridge tower, reflect the Valkyries becoming the 13th-active team in the WNBA."
Fans in San Francisco will have the opportunity to celebrate the release of the jerseys by participating in a scavenger hunt across the city. The team's social media accounts will provide clues for the locations of hidden jerseys.
The biggest question now is who will be wearing those uniforms.
Golden State's expansion draft is Friday, which will give the new team the opportunity to select up to 12 players. Other teams across the league could protect six players, including those whose draft rights they hold, and the Valkyries can only select one player from each team.
Yet the restriction of only six players per team means some of the deeper squads across the league are in line to lose some talent.
The WNBA does not publicly reveal the list of protected players, meaning any roster projections are largely a guessing game at this point. Still, Gilbert McGregor of Sporting News put together a mock expansion draft that featured the Valkyries selecting players such as Lexie Brown of the Los Angeles Sparks and Alissa Pili of the Minnesota Lynx.
Friday won't be the only opportunity for Golden State to add talent before the 2025 season starts.
It has the No. 5 overall pick in the 2025 WNBA draft in April and will surely look to keep at least one roster spot open for a talented prospect. A November mock draft from B/R projected the expansion team to select center Dominique Malonga from France with that No. 5 pick.
The players who do eventually make up the roster will be wearing these new uniforms on May 16 when they tip off the season against the Sparks.
