The Los Angeles Lakers took an ugly 134-93 loss to the Miami Heat on Wednesday, and LeBron James believes it's time to get back in the film room.
"I think we squash it, for sure," James said after the loss, per Jovan Buha of The Athletic. "And just see when you're individually f--king up and you're trying to rely on everybody else to cover for you, I think it starts on individuals first. All of us have to take accountability. It's great to see it on film and address it right there—right then and there. And then go from there."
Despite the loss, the King played an excellent game with 29 points, eight assists and five rebounds on 12-of-18 shooting from the field.
But Anthony Davis was just 3-of-14 from the field, and the Los Angeles defense had no answer for Miami's balanced attack. Tyler Herro poured in 31 points as one of six Heat players to score in double figures.
Head coach JJ Redick believes he and his team needs to take "some ownership" after the loss.
"Has to be some ownership," Redick told reporters. "You can splinter, and it's easy to not want the ownership, particularly when it's embarrassing. I'm embarrassed. We're all embarrassed. It's not a game that I thought we had the right fight, the right professionalism.
"There has to be some ownership on the court, and I'll take all the ownership in the world. This is my team and I lead it and I'm embarrassed. But I can't physically get us organized. I can't physically be into the basketball. I can't physically talk and call out [switches] and physically call out coverages. ... And by the way, I'm not blaming players. It's not. I own this, but going to need some ownership on the court as well. ... There's not a sense from me that we're together right now."
Things have been trending in the wrong direction for the Purple and Gold of late.
It seemed like they would be one of the top Western Conference playoff contenders when they started 10-4 in Redick's first season, but they are mired in the middle of a difficult slump with a 2-6 record in the last eight games.
What's more, four of those six losses during that stretch came by 25 or more points. Losses to the Denver Nuggets, Phoenix Suns, Oklahoma City Thunder and Minnesota Timberwolves in particular also hurt their standing in the Western Conference.
There is a ceiling for this Lakers squad compared to some of those other contenders, but they are still better than they have shown of late. James and Davis still represent one of the best one-two punches in the league, and it wasn't long ago this group was playing at a high level.
James believes some film study could help Los Angeles rediscover that level before it falls too far in the standings.
