Magic Johnson has joined the chorus of people ashamed of what they have seen from the Los Angeles Lakers recently.
In a post on X, the Lakers legend wrote he was "embarrassed for" the team during their performance in Wednesday's 134-93 loss to the Miami Heat.
Johnson actually sent his post in the third quarter, so he didn't even wait to see how bad things got for the Lakers by the time the game was over to share his feelings.
Embarrassment was a common sentiment expressed by Lakers players and coaches after this loss to the Heat.
"Has to be some ownership," head coach JJ Redick said. "You can splinter, and it's easy to not want the ownership, particularly when it's embarrassing. I'm embarrassed. We're all embarrassed. It's not a game that I thought we had the right fight, the right professionalism."
LeBron James didn't explicitly use the term "embarrassed" in his postgame comments, but said he agrees "1,000 percent" with Redick's comments.
The once-good vibes for the Lakers have given way to a sense of unease about the possibility of another disappointing season with James and Anthony Davis playing together.
It looked like the change at head coach to Redick from Darvin Ham was a brilliant move out of the gate. The Lakers began the season 10-4, including wins over the Minnesota Timberwolves and Phoenix Suns.
Davis looked like an MVP candidate with 31.3 points on 57.3 percent shooting and 11.2 rebounds in his first 14 games. James was continuing to defy all normal expectations for a player 22 years into his career, averaging 23.5 points, 9.4 assists and 8.1 rebounds per game in his first 14 starts.
Since Nov. 21, the Lakers have lost six of their last eight games. They have been held under 100 points in each of their last three losses. James missed 20 consecutive threes before hitting one in the third quarter on Wednesday.
Davis was held to a season-low eight points in 31 minutes against the Heat. He's averaging 18.0 points per game on 43.0 percent shooting seven games since Nov. 23.
The Lakers have fallen to ninth in the Western Conference with a 12-10 record. They are one game up in the win column on the Timberwolves and San Antonio Spurs in the standings.
Los Angeles average scoring margin of minus-4.2 points per game is the fourth-worst in the West, ahead of only the Portland Trail Blazers, Utah Jazz and New Orleans Pelicans.
