The playoff picture is becoming clearer each week as top teams earn their bid to the postseason while struggling teams have their unfortunate playoff fates turned into reality.
Last week, the Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills became the first two teams to officially secure a spot in the playoffs. It's not much of a surprise to see those two squads seal a trip to the postseason this early given the way they have played this season and we could very well see the Chiefs and Bills square off in the AFC Championship in a few months.
While Kansas City and Buffalo were riding high after clinching a postseason berth, several teams were eliminated from the playoffs in Week 13. The New York Giants, New England Patriots, Jacksonville Jaguars and Las Vegas Raiders have all been knocked out of playoff contention.
Heading into Week 14, here's a look at the updated standings as well as the playoff-clinching and elimination scenarios

Playoff Clinching Scenarios
Detroit Lions Clinch Playoff Berth Scenarios
- Lions win
- Buccaneers loss + Rams loss + Cardinals loss
- Buccaneers loss + Rams loss + Eagles win
- Falcons loss + Rams loss + Cardinals loss
- Falcons loss + Rams loss + Eagles win
The Lions, who have been one of the most dominant teams in the league this year, have a number of ways they can punch a ticket to the playoffs this week.
The simplest situation would be for Detroit to handle business against the Green Bay Packers, though a win is certainly not a given. The Packers have been great this year with their only three losses coming to the top teams in the NFC.
In their last meeting earlier this season, the Lions beat Green Bay 24-14. The Packers have won three straight since then.
Detroit looked vulnerable last week as it snuck past the Chicago Bears 23-20 and it will look to return to its dominant form on Thursday.
If the Lions can't extend their winning streak to 10 games, they'll have to leave their clinching hopes in the hands of other teams around the NFC.
Minnesota Vikings Clinch Playoff Berth Scenarios
- Vikings win + Cardinals loss + Rams loss
Another NFC North team also has a chance to ensure its postseason fate this week.
The Minnesota Vikings's chances to clinch are mostly out of their hands this week. The Vikings will need to beat the Atlanta Falcons, but they will also need some help from the Arizona Cardinals and Los Angeles Rams.
A win for the Cardinals is certainly doable as they'll take on the Seattle Seahawks, but the Rams would need to take down the Bills, which will be a tall task.
Minnesota will catch Atlanta on the heels of a bad performance from Kirk Cousins, who threw four interceptions in a loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. As the former Vikings quarterback goes up against his former team, he'll likely be motivated to pick up a big win. Minnesota will be looking to prove it's better off without him.
Philadelphia Eagles Clinch Playoff Berth Scenarios
- Eagles win + Falcons loss + Cardinals loss + Packers loss
- Eagles win + Falcons loss + Cardinals loss + Rams loss
- Eagles win + Buccaneers loss + Cardinals loss + Packers loss
- Eagles win + Falcons loss + Cardinals loss + Rams loss
The Eagles need quite a bit to happen this week to make the playoffs, but the first thing they can do is pick up a win. That should be a simple task as they take on the Carolina Panthers, but second-year quarterback Bryce Young has been playing well and gave the Chiefs a tough game just a few weeks ago.
From there, Philadelphia can only hope everything else works out in its favor.
Elimination Scenarios
Carolina Panthers Elimination Scenarios
- Panthers loss vs. Eagles
The Panthers will need a miraculous run to reach the playoffs and it starts on Sunday. Carolina will need to avoid a loss to the Eagles to stay in the playoff hunt, but that won't be an easy task whatsoever.
Philadelphia has won eight straight and most recently handled the Baltimore Ravens. Taking care of the Panthers will be much easier than last week's game.
Cleveland Browns Elimination Scenarios
- Browns loss vs. Steelers
The Browns gave the Denver Broncos an exciting matchup on Monday, but ultimately couldn't come away with a win. Now the Steelers can officially end their playoff hopes in what should be a relatively easy matchup for Pittsburgh.
Tennessee Titans Elimination Scenarios
- Titans loss vs. Jaguars
The Titans are also just a loss away from missing out on the playoffs, but they have a much easier matchup than the Panthers and Browns this week. They'll take on the Jaguars, who are already eliminated from the playoffs, as they try to keep their postseason hopes alive.
New York Jets Elimination Scenarios
- Jets loss vs. Dolphins
The second year of the Aaron Rodgers experiment hasn't gone well for the Jets and their playoff drought could extended to 15 years on Sunday. New York would need to beat the Dolphins and proceed to go on a magical run to close out the season in order to make the playoffs.
