NBA Cup 2024: Bracket Clinching Scenarios Ahead of Final Group Play Games

Joe Tansey

Five of the eight knockout-round spots in the 2024 NBA Cup must be filled on Tuesday.

The Atlanta Hawks, Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors have already clinched their spots as group winners.

The other group winners in the Eastern Conference will be easy to figure out. The Orlando Magic and New York Knicks square off for the East Group A crown, while the Detroit Pistons and Milwaukee Bucks face off for first place in East Group B.

West Group B is down to the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder, but they don't play each other. San Antonio needs a win to get through, while OKC needs a win and a Spurs loss.

The wild-card spots handed out to best second-place teams in each conference have to be figured out as well. A handful of teams in each conference are still alive to advance to the quarterfinals that way.

East Group A

The Orlando-New York winner claims first place in East Group A.

East Group B

The Detroit-Milwaukee winner advances as the East Group B champion.

Wild Card

Orlando, Detroit, Milwaukee and Boston are still alive in the wild-card hunt. New York can't advance as the wild-card team because it enters Tuesday with a worse point differential than the Celtics. New York wouldn't be able to make up the eight-point difference in a loss.

Orlando has the biggest buffer in the wild-card race because it has the best point differential at plus-60. The Magic need to lose by less than 37 points to get in as the wild-card team.

Milwaukee can't lose by more than five and Detroit needs to lose by less than six points to stay ahead of Boston.

The Pistons-Bucks loser needs the Magic to beat the Knicks to have the best chance of landing the wild-card spot.

Boston advances as the wild-card team if Orlando wins and the margin of victory in Detroit-Milwaukee is more than seven points in regulation.

West Group B

San Antonio clinches West Group B with a win over the Phoenix Suns.

Oklahoma City advances as group winner with a victory over the Utah Jazz and a San Antonio loss.

Phoenix can still win the group as well, but it needs to beat San Antonio and have OKC get upset by the Jazz.

Wild Card

The Dallas Mavericks enter Tuesday in the lead for the wild-card spot with a 2-1 record and a plus-41 point differential.

No other team in the West can jump the Mavericks on record. The second-place teams in West Groups A and B will finish 3-1 at best.

Dallas is in with a win and losses by OKC and Portland.

The Mavs can also get in by running up the score on Memphis and owning the best point differential in the West.

Phoenix, OKC, Portland, Denver, Memphis and the LA Clippers are all mathematically alive for the wild-card spot. All of them need the Mavs to lose to have a shot at advancing.

Phoenix, OKC and Portland are all 2-1 in group play. If any of those three teams or Dallas win, the Nuggets, Grizzlies and Clippers are eliminated.

San Antonio needs Portland, OKC, Dallas and Denver all to lose in order to just be in contention for a wild-card spot if it falls to Phoenix.

The most realistic scenario from Tuesday's games is that Dallas, OKC, Phoenix and Portland all finish at 3-1. In that case, OKC would win West Group B and the wild card would come down to the point differential tiebreaker currently in favor of the Mavs.
