CFB Playoff Picture 2024-25: Standings, Scenarios, Bracket Predictions After Week 14

Joe Tansey

The latest winds of chaos in college football swept up the Ohio State Buckeyes and Miami Hurricanes.

Ohio State fell for the fourth straight time to the Michigan Wolverines at the start of Saturday's Week 14 slate.

Miami was upset by the Syracuse Orange on the road to put its College Football Playoff status in peril.

Both the Buckeyes and Hurricanes dropped out of contention for their respective conference title games with their losses.

The Penn State Nittany Lions will play the Oregon Ducks in the Big Ten Championship Game, while the Clemson Tigers and SMU Mustangs will go head-to-head in the ACC Championship Game.

The SEC Championship Game was finalized on Saturday night with the Texas Longhorns' win over the Texas A&M Aggies. Texas plays the Georgia Bulldogs for the SEC's automatic bid next weekend.

Michigan Upsets Ohio State, Buckeyes Should Still Be in Playoff

Ohio State failed to defeat Michigan at home as a three-touchdown favorite.

The Buckeyes managed just 10 points at home and ended up on the wrong side of the rivalry showdown for the fourth straight year.

The loss knocked Ryan Day's team out of the Big Ten Championship Game, but it should still qualify for the CFB Playoff.

Ohio State should drop a handful of positions in Tuesday's playoff rankings, and that might not even host a first-round game with the expected tumble.

The Buckeyes do have a pair of top-five wins over the Penn State Nittany Lions and Indiana Hoosiers, but the loss to Michigan stands out when compared to some other two-loss teams.

Saturday's loss will not be enough to knock the Buckeyes out of the playoff entirely, but it did produce a ton of questions about if they are capable of winning a national title when they enter the 12-team postseason.

Miami Suffers Second Loss, Right on Edge of Playoff Conversation Now

Miami's loss to Syracuse also caused shockwaves across college football.

The Hurricanes are expected to be in a more perilous position than the Buckeyes due to a lack of quality wins.

Miami did not a play a single ranked opponent in the regular season and it's difficult to figure out what exactly is the team's best victory.

That is the conundrum the selection committee now faces when it pits Miami against the Big Ten and SEC schools with two losses who played far more challenging schedules.

The debate for the final at-large spot could come down to a two-loss Miami and the three-loss Alabama Crimson Tide, who have a 3-1 record against Top 25 opposition.

Alabama and two other three-loss SEC programs were ranked above four two-loss teams, three of which were from the Big 12, last week.

If Miami slides in ahead of Alabama, the ACC will likely place two teams into the playoff since the SMU-Clemson winner next week will get into the 12-team field.

Texas, Georgia to Meet in SEC Title Game

Texas assured itself of a spot in the 12-team field with its primetime win over Texas A&M.

The Longhorns are one of a few teams with fewer than two losses at 11-1 and they have a chance to avenge their only defeat to Georgia in the SEC Championship Game.

Georgia survived an eight-overtime battle with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Friday to move to 9-2 and avoid a drop in Tuesday's rankings.

A loss in the SEC title game should not affect either team's playoff status. Texas would be 11-2 with its only defeats to Georgia, while UGA would be 9-3 with a 3-3 mark against ranked opposition.

At least three SEC teams will be in the playoff if you believe the SEC title game result doesn't affect the 12-team field. The Tennessee Volunteers will be safely inside the top 10.

Alabama's fate could come down to a direct comparison to Miami. The Crimson Tide have one more loss than the Hurricanes, but they played a tougher schedule.

However, the knock against Bama is its defeats to a pair of unranked teams and that could be used against the Tide in a debate against Miami.
