Ohio State University Police confirmed that some officers used pepper spray in an effort to break up an on-field fight following Michigan's 13-10 upset win over Ohio State at Ohio Stadium in Columbus on Saturday.
After an attempt was apparently made to plant a Michigan flag at midfield, Ohio State linebacker Jack Sawyer ripped the flag away, setting off a brawl between the two teams that required police intervention:
Amid speculation that some officers appeared to use pepper spray in order to subdue some of those involved in the fracas, OSU Police confirmed that to be true:
The wild scene followed one of the most surprising results of the 2024 college football season, as previously 6-5 Michigan went on the road and beat an Ohio State team that entered the game with one loss and as the No. 2-ranked team in the College Football Playoff rankings.
Ohio State head coach Ryan Day, who is undoubtedly set to come under fire with plenty of criticism due to Saturday's loss, commented on his team's role in the postgame melee.
Speaking to reporters, Day said the following:
"Yeah, I don't know all the details of it. But I know that these guys are looking to put a flag on our field and our guys weren't going to let that happen. I'll find out exactly what happened, but this is our field and certainly we're embarrassed at the fact we lost the game, but there's some prideful guys on our team that weren't just going to let that happen."
The dynamic Ohio State offense was a shell of its usual self thanks to the physical play of Michigan's defense on Saturday.
OSU compiled just 252 total yards, including 77 rushing yards on 26 carries, while Ohio State quarterback Will Howard was held to 175 passing yards, one touchdown and two interceptions.
Michigan struggled offensively in its own right, but running back Kalel Mullings ripped off 27 of his 116 rushing yards on a run during the decisive drive of the game, setting up a go-ahead field goal with less than one minute remaining, which turned out to be the game-winner.
The Wolverines have now beaten Ohio State in "The Game" on four straight occasions, including twice on the Buckeyes' home field.
This marks the first time Michigan has beaten Ohio State four times in a row since it did so from 1988 to 1991.
The Wolverines were the dominant team in college football last season, going undefeated and winning the national championship, but The Game was expected to go much differently this season.
Even though Michigan lost several key players and head coach Jim Harbaugh to the NFL, the Wolverines got up for Saturday's game and shocked their biggest rival, denying them a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game in the process.
While 7-5 Michigan will now await the announcement of which bowl game it will be a part of, 10-2 Ohio State will have to sweat things out and hope the College Football Playoff committee believes it has done enough to be in the 12-time CFP field.
