The Boston Red Sox are the team to watch amid rumors that the Chicago White Sox plan to trade left-hander Garrett Crochet this offseason, MLB Network's Jon Morosi reported.
The Red Sox will be "especially" competitive for Crochet if they do not land star outfielder Juan Soto or pitchers Max Fried and Corbin Burnes in free agency, Morosi said on Wednesday.
According to Morosi, the White Sox are "would prefer to get prospects who have not even debuted yet in the major league" in exchange for Crochet.
Crochet, who just completed his first season as a starter, is arbitration-eligible for the next two seasons. He earned an All-Star nod after recording a 3.58 ERA and 209 strikeouts in 32 starts and 146.0 innings pitched in 2024.
USA Today's Bob Nightengale recently reported that the Philadelphia Phillies have held "extensive talks" with the White Sox regarding a potential trade for crochet.
According to Nightengale, the Phillies offered third baseman Alec Bohm and outfield prospect Justin Crawford as part of the potential trade package.
That trade hasn't materialized in part, according to Nightengale, because the White Sox were "concerned" with Bohm's slump in the second half of the 2024 season.
Per Morosi, the team also believes they are "far away" from contending and could be prioritizing prospects rather than current players.
Morosi named outfielder Roman Anthony, shortstop Marcelo Mayer and second baseman/shortstop/outfielder Kristian Campbell as trade possibilities. The three prospects are listed in the top three of the Red Sox's 2024 prospect rankings.
There is one more obstacle in the way of a potential Crochet trade. Nightengale reported that the White Sox would "love" to trade Luis Robert Jr. before dealing Crochet. Robert has seen his early career derailed by injuries that once again limited him to 100 games in 2024 and could potentially impact his trade value.
The Red Sox rotation is currently set to be led by Tanner Houck, Brayan Bello and Kutter Crawford. The statuses of Lucas Giolito and Garrett Whitlock are in question for the 2025 season after both underwent elbow procedures this year.
Houck did his best work of the 2024 campaign in the first half, when he recorded a 2.54 ERA through 117.0 innings, before slowing down to pitch a 4.23 ERA through 61.2 innings in the latter part of the season. Crochet could potentially slot into the top of the rotation and move Houck to a No. 2 role should the Red Sox be able to work out a deal this winter.
