Beyond Juan Soto, there is a bevy of high-profile free agents looking to continue their careers with contending teams in pursuit of a World Series title.
Alex Bregman already has two championships to his name, while pitcher Max Fried has one. Walker Buehler has two with the Dodgers, and Corbin Burnes and Blake Snell remain in search of their first to go along with their Cy Young awards.
All were the subjects of recent insider reports.
Find out the latest on each and where they may wind up with these way-too-early predictions.
Alex Bregman
Once the Juan Soto domino falls, free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman figures to be one of the most coveted remaining players on the market.
One team interested in acquiring him is the Detroit Tigers, per Jon Heyman of The New York Post.
If Bregman joined the Detroit organization, which excelled in the second half of the 2024 season to make the playoffs, he would reunite with former Astros skipper AJ Hinch and give a relatively young locker room some veteran leadership.
The question is whether the 30-year-old would leave Houston, the only organization he has ever played for, and head north.
Bregman had another strong season for the Astros, recording 151 hits, 79 runs, 26 home runs, and 75 RBI, with a league-leading fielding percentage of .972 and a major league-leading 103 put-outs.
He is an elite player at his position and someone who has plenty of meaningful baseball left in him, so it's no surprise a team like the Tigers would feel comfortable bringing him on board to provide stability at a key spot on the diamond and knowledge beyond the game.
While there is no certainty Bregman will leave the Astros, there are few better fits for him than the Tigers, with whom he could see out his career while contending in the AL Central.
Prediction: Bregman re-signs with Houston, but not without a big push from Detroit
Walker Buehler
Walker Buehler answered a hugely disappointing regular season in Los Angeles with two performances on the mound in the playoffs that helped the Dodgers win the 2024 World Series.
Now a free agent, he has the opportunity to leave the only organization he has known and continue his career for another contender, such as the New York Yankees.
MLB Network's Jon Morosi reported there is mutual interest between Buehler and the AL champs.
The 30-year-old spent most of 2024 recovering from Tommy John surgery and in his 16 appearances, he gave up 45 earned runs, cumulated an ERA of 5.38, and tallied a 1-6 win-loss record. His 2.3 strikeout-to-walk rate was his worst since his rookie season in 2017, as was his 1.55 WHIP.
In the playoffs, he came through in a big way for the Dodgers.
In 10 innings of play against the Mets and Yankees, he allowed zero earned runs while facing 39 batters. He was stellar and wrapped things up for L.A. with a 16-pitch save in the World Series-clinching Game 5.
The Yankees watched closely as Buehler sent them home without a championship ring, so it makes sense that they would be intrigued at the possibility of bringing him on board to strengthen their rotation.
Like Bregman, though, he has spent his entire career in Los Angeles.
If there is any indication that the two sides could make a deal happen, one would have to assume he would be open to returning to the only organization he has ever known, with a roster that is as impressive as any in professional baseball.
Prediction: Buehler returns to Los Angeles on a short-term deal
Top Free-Agent Pitchers
Heyman also reported that the Boston Red Sox are in on free-agent pitchers Corbin Burnes, Blake Snell and Max Fried as they seek to return to relevancy in the AL.
The Red Sox had the seventh-best team ERA among starting pitchers in 2024 at .381, so there is an argument to be made that they don't need a high-priced starter as much as they need an upgrade at other positions.
With the AL East featuring electric offenses in New York and Baltimore, and Toronto and Tampa expected to get better in the offseason, it makes sense that Boston would want to bolster its rotation to combat them.
Burnes is expected to be the most coveted of the starters as a Cy Young candidate, with a value of at least $175. Snell and Fried would follow, though all three are drawing interest from contending teams.
The Red Sox have also met with—and remain interested in—Juan Soto, potentially limiting the amount they are willing to spend on a starter.
With Morosi telling MLB Network that the Dodgers and Orioles are favorites for Burnes, it would leave Snell and Fried as the most likely options for Boston.
Snell and his 3.12 ERA, 145 strikeouts, and 1.05 WHIP would be a nice fit in Beantown, and the two-time Cy Young winner would have an opportunity to show off against some of the most dangerous bats in the American League.
Prediction: Of the aforementioned pitchers, Boston signs Snell
