Predictions
The least dramatic MVP race, perhaps ever, comes to a head Thursday when MLB announces the AL and NL winners. Those players have been known for months, thanks to extraordinary play on the field and most importantly, through the regular season.
Judge will ride his 58 home runs, 144 RBI, career and MLB-leading 223 OPS, and a slash line of .322/.458/.701 to the American League trophy, the second of his career.
In the National League, Ohtani will capture his third MVP award on the strength of a historic season that saw him found the 50/50 club, with 54 home runs and 59 stolen bases. His MLB-leading 134 runs, league-leading 130 RBI, and .390/.646/1.036 slash line did not hurt his case.
He would become the first full-time designated hitter to win the award.
That Ohtani did not play defense or pitch in 2024 may lead some voters to cast for the Mets' Lindor but it would not be surprising in the least for at least one of the two, Judge or Ohtani, to win unanimously.
Arguably the two brightest stars in the game, in its two biggest markets, showed out in 2024 en route to a World Series match-up in which they may not have been the headline makers, but also would not have happened without their stellar play on the road to it.
In a star-driven industry such as professional sports, MLB has to be happy that its two most recognizable stars were standard-bearers for the rest of the league this year and will take their rightful places in the history books with their latest honors.
