Bowl Projections 2024: Playoff Bracket Scenarios, Predictions for Week 13

Jake Rill

The College Football Playoff landscape continues to shift on a weekly basis during the 2024 season. That was again the case this past weekend, when several results shook up the projected 12-team field.

For one, BYU suffered its first loss of the season, dropping to 9-1 with a 17-13 home loss to Kansas. It opens the door in the Big 12 for Colorado, which beat Utah 49-24 for its fourth consecutive victory and (like BYU) has only one conference loss.

Also, Georgia pushed its way back into the CFP picture with a 31-17 home win vs. Tennessee. The Bulldogs' two losses this season have been road contests at Alabama and Ole Miss, each of which is a projected playoff team at the moment, too.

Before the next edition of the CFP rankings are released Tuesday night, here's an early look at some predictions heading into Week 13 of the season.

Byes: No. 1 Oregon (11-0, 8-0 in Big Ten), No. 2 Texas (9-1, 5-1 in SEC), No. 3 Miami (9-1, 5-1 in ACC), No. 4 Boise State (9-1, 6-0 in Mountain West)

No. 5 Ohio State (9-1, 6-1 in Big Ten) vs. No. 12 Colorado (8-2, 6-1 in Big 12)

No. 6 Penn State (9-1, 6-1 in Big Ten) vs. No. 11 Georgia (8-2, 6-2 in SEC)

No. 7 Indiana (10-0, 7-0 in Big Ten) vs. No. 10 Ole Miss (8-2, 4-2 in SEC)

No. 8 Notre Dame (9-1) vs. No. 9 Alabama (8-2, 4-2 in SEC)

Oregon improved to 11-0 and should remain atop the CFP rankings. However, the Ducks avoided a near scare on Saturday, when they pulled out a 16-13 victory at Wisconsin.

Atticus Sappington kicked a tie-breaking 24-yard field goal with 2 minutes and 36 seconds to go, keeping Oregon's perfect record intact. It should still be undefeated heading into the Big Ten Championship Game, as its only remaining contest is a Nov. 30 home matchup against Washington.

Texas also took care of business this past week in a tight SEC contest. The Longhorns went on the road to Arkansas and won 20-10, as Quinn Ewers threw a pair of touchdown passes to Matthew Golden, the second of which sealed the game in the fourth quarter.

Miami had a bye in Week 11, but it remains in a good position to potentially win the ACC title.

As for the projected No. 4 seed, BYU and Colorado are in contention as the front-runners to win the Big 12, but Boise State is also building a strong case as the non-Power Four conference champion. The Broncos could be ranked ahead of both the Cougars and the Buffaloes in the next CFP rankings.

Boise State overcame an early 14-point deficit to win 42-21 at San Jose State and remain undefeated in Mountain West play. Ashton Jeanty continued his remarkable season by rushing for 159 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Broncos to victory.

Ohio State (a 31-7 win at Northwestern) and Penn State (a 49-10 win at Purdue) were both victorious this past week, while Indiana was on a bye. So the top of the Big Ten standings remains crowded, though Week 13 will deliver a matchup to help sort things out.

The Buckeyes are set to host the undefeated Hoosiers on Saturday in a game that should help determine the matchup for the Big Ten Championship Game. There's a good chance the winner of this game will go on to face Oregon for the conference title on Dec. 7.

In one scenario, Penn State and Indiana could both finish the regular season with only one loss, each losing to only Ohio State. At that point, the Nittany Lions and Hoosiers would still have strong CFP resumes, considering their only setbacks would have come against the formidable Buckeyes.

Notre Dame continued to march forward with a 35-14 home win over Virginia last week. The Fighting Irish will face a tough test this Saturday, though, when they take on Army on a neutral field at Yankee Stadium in New York.

Alabama and Ole Miss remain in the projected CFP field, while Georgia will likely take over the spot previously occupied by Tennessee. It seems likely the SEC will have four representatives, with the Crimson Tide, Rebels and Bulldogs all in good positions to join the Longhorns in the playoff.

There's a chance the Big 12 champion will get a first-round bye. But at the moment, either BYU or Colorado is projected to be the No. 12 seed, as Boise State continues to roll.

It should be exciting if the Cougars and Buffaloes meet for the Big 12 title on Dec. 7. The two teams haven't clashed in the regular season, but Colorado is currently building more momentum. BYU will also face a tough test in Week 13, when it goes on the road to face Arizona State on Saturday.
