Fans rejoiced over the announcement that WWE would be bringing WarGames to the main roster for the first time as part of Survivor Series 2022. After only two years, though, the match is already starting to lose a lot of its mystique.
Two WarGames matches are slated for this year's Survivor Series on November 30, and the builds to both bouts have been botched. The men's and women's contests will deliver from an in-ring standpoint, but the stipulation feels significantly less special than in years past.
For the third straight year, LA Knight won't be a part of the event as of this writing, but he has been shining as United States champion since SummerSlam. This is despite Booker T—a WWE Hall of Famer and current commentator for NXT—recently telling the Hall of Fame podcast his star has "dimmed" ever so slightly.
At a time when Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns are dominating the main event scene on SmackDown, Knight has made the most of his midcard spot and been far more successful than at any other point in his entire career.
This installment of Quick Takes will defend Knight's booking as of late, All Elite Wrestling needing Kenny Omega much more than he thinks, the endgame for Bron Breakker's Intercontinental Championship reign, and more.
WarGames Is on the Verge of Losing Its Luster
WarGames making its main roster debut in 2022 was long overdue after being an annual staple in NXT for five years. It was the perfect place for faction warfare to come to a head where storytelling took precedence and brand supremacy wasn't a factor.
Unfortunately, this year's men's and women's matches don't pack as much of a punch as past installments.
The ongoing Bloodline civil war going through WarGames has been expected since after WrestleMania 40, but the decision to expand the match to a five-on-five format per tradition was an unnecessary call.
Bronson Reed has made the most of the opportunity but has no involvement with The Bloodline at the moment, while Seth Rollins being added to Roman Reigns' squad would lack logic given their own checkered history.
The women's match, on the other hand, has zero reason to exist at all this year. The intertwining rivalries have no business being inside the two cages and would make more sense as a Survivor Series elimination tag team bout.
Running WarGames simply for the sake of doing so will single-handedly kill whatever mystique the gimmick has left.
Going forward, there's no need for it to be synonymous solely with Survivor Series. Keeping it exclusive to the event will see it suffer the same fate as Hell in a Cell before long.
Jake Paul Fight Proves Mike Tyson Could Still Work as a WrestleMania Draw
Although the heavily hyped Netflix fight between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul was underwhelming from bell to bell, there can be no doubt it was a huge success for the streaming service with millions of viewers tuning in live to witness history regardless of the outcome.
Unsurprisingly, that caught the attention of WWE. Per pro wrestling insider WrestleVotes, the company is interested in doing something with Tyson and Paul's older brother, Logan, at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas.
Of course, both men have an extensive history with WWE. Paul has been a part-time wrestler with the promotion since 2022 and reigned as United States champion for nearly nine months, and Tyson was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame for his critically acclaimed involvement with the WrestleMania 14 build in 1998.
Logan unofficially challenged Tyson immediately following the fight with Jake, and while it would be another boxing disaster, putting them in the same segment at The Show of Shows isn't entirely out of the question.
Not only is Paul due back in WWE soon, but all of the buzz surrounding Tyson's return to the ring also proves the former boxing world heavyweight champion is still very much a draw.
The 58-year-old wouldn't necessarily need to get physical, but a quick cameo and an interaction with Logan on The Grandest Stage of Them All could make for a memorable WrestleMania 41 moment.
AEW Needs Kenny Omega More Than He Thinks
After nearly a year away from in-ring competition, all signs point to Kenny Omega returning to the squared circle for a match against Gabe Kidd at Wrestle Dynasty in Japan on January 5 before resurfacing on AEW TV.
When asked by Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful as to why he decided to prioritize a comeback to NJPW over AEW, Omega said the latter promotion has a "good thing going" and he doesn't think his presence is needed there right now.
Based on how cold AEW's televised product has been for months, those comments couldn't be any further from the truth.
Omega has several ready-made storylines with The Elite, Konosuke Takeshita, Will Ospreay and others. AEW boasts a star-studded roster these days, yet very few members feel as special as they should.
The 41-year-old being back in the mix would be a breath of fresh air, if nothing else.
New Japan Pro-Wrestling and other global promotions involved could use a boost of their own and Omega will be a welcome addition to the Wrestle Dynasty card, but his next AEW appearance should be imminent.
Omega wanting to see others step up and be spotlighted in his absence is admirable, but AEW could use as many notable names as it can get at the moment in a desperate attempt to inject some excitement into the weekly shows.
Sheamus Should Be Endgame for Bron Breakker's 2nd IC Title Reign
Prior to his Intercontinental Championship clash on the November 18 edition of Raw, Bron Breakker hadn't done anything of note since getting the belt back from Jey Uso at the end of October.
The second-generation star was shockingly absent from the program for weeks on end before finally being challenged to a championship match by Sheamus. Their excellent encounter was interrupted by Ludwig Kaiser, seemingly setting up a Triple Threat for the title in the coming weeks.
It was wise to book a non-finish to Sheamus vs. Breakker to ensure the decisive finish is saved for down the road when The Celtic Warriors becomes the intercontinental champion at long last.
This prestigious prize has alluded the Irishman throughout his illustrious career. He could capture it on any average Raw or premium live event and it would be a big deal, but holding off on delivering such a monumental moment until WrestleMania 41 would be the best direction to go in.
Breakker will hardly have a shortage of credible contenders to defend against until then, provided he doesn't drop the belt early so he can be the one to retire the returning Goldberg.
WWE Has Found the Right Role for LA Knight
LA Knight's meteoric rise to WWE's main event scene in the second half of 2023 was so sudden that it was almost impossible for him to go anywhere but down when he failed to unseat Roman Reigns as undisputed WWE universal champion at Crown Jewel or the Royal Rumble.
It did feel as if WWE wasn't utilizing the ultra-popular loudmouth to his full potential coming out of WrestleMania 40 where he beat AJ Styles, but he eventually recovered by securing the United States Championship at SummerSlam and embarking on the fun run he's been on since.
Booker T claiming his "star has dimmed" and he "needs something to spark his flame again" are in direct response to him being slotted as an upper-midcarder and not a world title contender—for now.
Currently, Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns are occupying that section of SmackDown, leaving The Megastar to do as well as he can with what's available to him.
That includes defending the star-spangled prize on a regular basis, having high-quality matches and staying over with the audience at an elite level.
His return to the top of the card is inevitable and a world title win isn't implausible, but until then, he's thriving with gold in his grasp and the company clearly behind him.
