CFB Playoff Picture 2024-25: Bracket Projections, Scenarios After Week 13 AP Rankings

Joe Tansey

Around 15 teams can make a claim to be a College Football Playoff contender going into Week 13.

At the moment, four Big Ten and four SEC schools will likely make the 12-team field. All eyes will be on the Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday to see if they can compete with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Indiana enters Week 13 as one of four Big Ten teams in the top five of the AP Top 25.

A win, or a convincing performance in a loss, will put Indiana into the field, which is bad news for the handful of two-loss teams in the SEC.

A fifth spot for the SEC will not open up unless Indiana or the Notre Dame Fighting Irish stumble in the final two weeks of the regular season.

The amount of strong teams in the Big Ten and SEC mean that the ACC and Big 12 will likely put a single team each into the 12-team field. That puts even more pressure on the top teams in each league to make the conference championship game to have a shot at earning an automatic bid to the playoff.

The biggest game left on the Big Ten regular-season schedule takes place on Saturday in Columbus.

The second-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes host the undefeated fifth-ranked Indiana Hoosiers in a game that will have Big Ten Championship Game and CFB Playoff ramifications.

An Ohio State win would likely set up a Big Ten title game matchup with the top-ranked Oregon Ducks. The Buckeyes will be a significant favorite against the Michigan Wolverines next week.

An Indiana win would shake everything up because that would then drop the Buckeyes to two losses and closer to the chaotic mess for the final few at-large positions.

The Hoosiers might have to sweat out their playoff status with a loss because of the large amount of two-loss teams in the SEC.

Indiana has not played a Top 25 team so far this season. The worry for Indiana is that, despite having one loss, it would be in a perilous situation because of its schedule.

The best possible losing situation for Indiana would be to play Ohio State close to prove to the selection committee that belongs among college football's elite.

Georgia, Tennessee Involved in Tight Competition for Final At-Large Spots

The Georgia Bulldogs' win over the Tennessee Volunteers on Saturday further muddied the waters in the fight for the final few at-large positions.

The AP Top 25 placed Georgia at No. 8, Tennessee at No. 10 and the Ole Miss Rebels in the middle at No. 9.

Ole Miss beat Georgia, Georgia beat Tennessee and the Vols do not play the Rebels.

All three programs sit at 8-2 and they are directly behind the 8-2 Alabama Crimson Tide, who beat Georgia but lost by a touchdown to Tennessee.

Any one of those four teams can make a strong case to get into the CFB Playoff, but there's no clear way to define how they should be ordered.

One of them could be left out if four Big Ten teams get in and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish stay inside the top 10.

All of the SEC squads should be rooting for Notre Dame to stumble against either the Army Black Knights or USC Trojans in the next two weeks. A loss by the Irish would open up an at-large spot to allow all four two-loss SEC teams in the AP Top 10 to reach the playoff.

Massive Week Ahead for the Big 12

Week 13 in the Big 12 all of a sudden has massive implications for the CFB Playoff.

BYU's loss to the Kansas Jayhawks late on Saturday night opened up the possibility for the Arizona State Sun Devils and Iowa State Cyclones to make the Big 12 Championship Game.

Arizona State, who knocked off the Kansas State Wildcats in Week 12, hosts BYU on Saturday.

Colorado, who is 6-1 in Big 12 play along with BYU, visits a Kansas team hunting for yet another upset.

Wins by BYU and Colorado on Saturday makes the Big 12 title game picture easy to figure out, but if more upsets occur in the conference, there is a chance four teams end Week 13 with two defeats in conference play.

Earning spots in the Big 12 Championship Game is imperative for all teams in the league because no one is ranked in the top 13 of the AP poll. The conference title game winner will likely be the only Big 12 representative in the CFB Playoff.
