Amid rumors that Daniel Jones might be headed for the bench to protect him from injury, the New York Giants sent two key members of the front office to Folsom Field for Saturday's game between Utah and Colorado.
Per Sports Illustrated's Bryan Fischer, Giants general manager Joe Schoen and director of player personnel Tim McDonald are in attendance to watch the top prospects Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter lead the Buffaloes against Utah.
The Giants are on a bye this week, so it's a perfect opportunity for some of their top personnel people to get an in-person look at players they might want to pursue in the 2025 NFL draft.
Quarterback figures to be a point of emphasis for the Giants during the offseason. They can move on from Jones after this season because all of the guaranteed money in his contract he signed in March 2023 is paid out by the end of the 2024 campaign.
The only thing that could impact New York's financial commitment to Jones in 2025 is if he suffers an injury. There is a $24 million guarantee in his deal if he suffers a major injury that prevents him from playing for all or most of next season.
Following Sunday's 20-17 loss to the Carolina Panthers, Giants head coach Brian Daboll was noncommittal about Jones as the starting quarterback coming out of the bye.
"We're gonna get started on this process here of going back and looking at everything you'd normally look at in a bye week," Daboll said on Monday. "Schemes, situational stuff, technique. All of the things you do in a normal bye week."
The Athletic's Dianna Russini did pour a bit of cold water on the idea of Jones being benched, saying on The Dan Le Batard Show with Stugotz that there are some people who think he might remain their starter coming out of the bye.
Of the players Schoen and McDonald will see in Colorado, Sanders would be the one to fill their need at quarterback. He might not be the best quarterback on the board when they make their pick, though.
B/R's NFL scouting department has Miami's Cam Ward ranked as the top quarterback and No. 6 overall player in the 2025 class. Sanders isn't far behind as the second-best quarterback and No. 11 overall prospect.
Hunter is the best overall prospect and would make for a unique addition to any roster because of his ability to play on both sides of the ball.
The Giants currently own the No. 2 pick in the 2025 draft based on the current standings, so they could have their pick of Ward, Sanders and Hunter depending on how things play out the rest of the season.
