Following her controversial, unanimous-decision victory over Amanda Serrano on Friday night, undisputed lightweight and super lightweight women's boxing champion Katie Taylor made it clear that she isn't concerned about those who are questioning the legitimacy of her win.
When asked about her reaction to Serrano's trainer complaining about the result, Taylor downplayed it, telling reporters: "I've fought her twice, I've beat her twice. All the judges were in agreement. I really couldn't care less what's being said about the fight. I'm standing here again, I'm 2-0 against Serrano and I'm very, very happy."
Despite Serrano throwing and connecting on significantly more punches than Taylor, all three judges scored the fight 95-94 in favor of Taylor.
Shortly after her loss, Serrano posted a rundown of the CompuBox numbers from the fight, which showed her landing 107 more punches than Taylor and landing a higher percentage of punches as well:
Serrano dealt with a large cut over her right eye for much of the bout as a result of multiple accidental headbutts from Taylor. The cut was significant enough that the fight was paused at one point so a doctor could examine Serrano.
The fight continued and Taylor eventually had a point deducted after yet another headbutt, but the Irishwoman was able to overcome the deduction to win by a single point on all three scorecards.
Serrano's trainer was vocal about the scoring and about Taylor's headbutts in the post-fight interview, while Serrano called the judges "shady."
However, the Puerto Rican star expressed regret over some of the things she said during the interview, and she congratulated Taylor for her win in an X post on Saturday morning:
Friday's bout was a rematch of the fight between Taylor and Serrano at Madison Square Garden in New York City in April 2022.
Taylor won that encounter by split decision, meaning she is no stranger to controversial and much-debated decisions.
After a majority-decision loss to Chantelle Cameron, followed by a majority-decision win over Cameron to regain her titles, Taylor was lined up for a rematch with Serrano.
Meanwhile, Serrano went on a five-fight winning streak after the first loss Taylor, winning multiple featherweight titles along the way.
Serrano moved back up in weight to face Taylor once again, and although plenty felt she deserved to be rewarded with a victory, her career record dropped to 47-3-1 with the loss.
Taylor, who is now 24-1, didn't shoot down the idea of a third fight with Serrano, though, saying she would be open to it if Serrano wants to run it back again.
Given that Serrano vs. Taylor was by far the most exciting fight on Friday's card and likely among the greatest women's boxing matches of all time, it could be lucrative for both fighters to make their rivalry a trilogy.
