The gate for the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight has exceeded $17.8 million, setting the Texas combat sports record.
Boxing journalist Dan Rafael relayed the information from Most Valuable Promotions on Friday night:
The long-awaited fight between the 58-year-old Tyson and the 27-year-old Paul will take place Friday evening in Arlington's AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.
MVP announced it is expecting 70,000 fans in attendance for the card.
Friday's gate is also higher than any non-Las Vegas UFC gate in history, with the exception being Conor McGregor vs. Eddie Alvarez in New York in 2016. The card also features a massive bout between undisputed lightweight champion Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano, a great matchup in its own right.
There's been much intrigue surrounding Tyson, who hasn't fought professionally since his final match in 2005. He fought for two decades and was the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world from 1987-1990. At one point, he was 37-0 with 33 knockouts. Simply put, Tyson was the baddest and most feared fighter on the planet.
But he's 58 years old now, so there are naturally questions as to how he'll fare in the ring.
This boxing match will be a bit tapered down, with eight two-minute rounds instead of 10 or 12 three-minute rounds. Both fighters will also have 14-ounce gloves instead of the usual 10-ounce ones.
Still, Tyson hasn't fought in 19 years outside an exhibition match against Roy Jones Jr. in 2020. It'll be tough for him to go against the 27-year-old Paul, a social media star who's surprised in the ring with a 10-1 record. He's amassed wins against some big names, including Tyron Woodley (twice), Nate Diaz and Anderson Silva, all ex-MMA stars.
Then again, he is facing someone who, at his peak, was an absolute legend. Perhaps Tyson has something left in the tank for one more fight.
We'll find out soon enough, and it's clear tens of thousands of fans want to find out how this all goes down too.
