Gunther Beats Damian Priest to Retain WWE World Title at 2024 Survivor Series

Mike Chiari

Gunther defeated Damian Priest at WWE Survivor Series: WarGames on Saturday night to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.

Gunther targeted Priest's apparent upper left arm injury, aiming to inflict as much damage as possible and leaving him unable to perform any finishing moves.

The battle spilled outside, where a devastating attack by Priest's former companion, Finn Balor, allowed Gunther to seize complete control.

Gunther booted Balor away, threw Priest back into the ring, and locked him in a headlock, putting Priest to sleep to retain the title.

Saturday's bout was a rematch from SummerSlam, which saw Gunther parlay winning King of the Ring into beating Priest for the world heavyweight title due largely to interference from Finn Bálor.

While Bálor was Priest's longtime friend and stablemate in the Judgment Day, he turned his back on Priest at SummerSlam and cost him the title.

In the month since then, Priest has been at odds with Bálor, Dominik Mysterio and the rest of the Judgment Day, but he recently turned his attention back to recapturing the world title, which he initially won via Money in the Bank cash-in at WrestleMania 40.

Priest was given the opportunity to earn a title shot on the Nov. 4 episode of Raw when he was chosen to compete in a Fatal 4-Way to determine the No. 1 contender for the World Heavyweight Championship.

Despite facing Mysterio and two other former world champs in Seth Rollins and Sheamus, Priest was victorious, setting the stage for his long-awaited rematch with The Ring General.

On the following episode of Raw, Priest and Gunther engaged in a war of words, and Priest clearly tried to get under Gunther's skin by bringing up his champion vs. champion loss to Cody Rhodes at Crown Jewel.

A furious Ludwig Kaiser stood up for Gunther by calling Priest trash, leading to a brawl and a subsequent match later in the night.

Priest beat Kaiser in a singles contest to build further momentum ahead of Survivor Series, and he made his intentions clear by staring down Gunther and showing no fear.

Despite being in excellent form entering Survivor Series, Priest fell short in his attempt to take back the World Heavyweight Championship, ensuring Gunther's continued reign atop Raw.
