Teresa Weatherspoon headlines the list of coaches for Unrivaled ahead of its inaugural season, which tips off on Jan. 17.
The former Chicago Sky head coach is joined by Phil Handy, Adam Harrington, Nola Henry, DJ Sackmann and Andrew Wade.
Weatherspoon is a WNBA legend. She was a five-time All-Star and two-time Defensive Player of the Year, and she was included in the league's 15th and 20th anniversary teams.
The 58-year-old was fired by the Chicago Sky this past offseason after spending one year as their head coach. The Sky went 13-27 as they kicked off a total rebuild.
Unrivaled president Alex Bazzell told SB Nation's Noa Dalzell that it didn't take long to settle on Weatherspoon for one of the six coaching slots.
"When I sat down with her, it was an easy conversation, because she gets it—she understands more than anyone what the power of this is for the players," he said. "So, we just wanted people who could relate to the athletes, that could help the athletes improve—that could tap into mindset development as well. She was a no-brainer for us, to be quite honest."
Ben Pickman of The Athletic noted player development is a consistent theme with the other five coaches as well.
Handy is a longtime NBA assistant and trainer, having interacted directly with numerous NBA and WNBA stars.
Harrington, Wade, Henry and Sackmann have all worked as assistant coaches or player development staffers too.
Unrivaled is the brainchild of Bazzell along with Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier and New York Liberty star Breanna Stewart. The league will utilize the 3x3 style that has grown in popularity thanks to its inclusion in the Summer Olympics and the rise of the BIG3 league.
Thirty-two players are confirmed for the venture with four still to be announced. Jewell Loyd, Kelsey Plum, Chelsea Gray, Brittney Griner, Angel Reese and Aliyah Boston are among the stars who have signed on.
