Kaleena Smith is just 16 years old, but she is already making history.
The highly regarded basketball prospect agreed to a multiyear shoe deal with Adidas and became the company's first women's basketball name, image and likeness signing Thursday, per insider Nick DePaula.
"If you watch her play, her game speaks for itself," basketball legend Candace Parker said. "As a brand, we felt like this was a perfect fit."
Smith is a 5-star prospect and the No. 1 overall player in the 2027 recruiting class, per 247Sports' composite rankings.
She already made an impression at the USA Basketball 17-and-Under Trials and appears to be a star in the making even though she is still multiple years away from lacing it up in the college game.
"Her ability to score has never been in question, but Smith showed that her court vision is a major strength during the trials," Brandon Clay of 247Sports wrote. "There were multiple passes that Smith was able to fit through tight windows, hitting teammates in stride for layups. She had the feel of a player who could make this roster as a true lead guard, and she proceeded to do just that."
This is the first signing for Adidas under Parker, who is now the brand's President of Adidas Women's Basketball.
"When I started in my role, I wanted to take an innovative approach in how we connect with the best players in the game and empower them in their pursuit of excellence on and off the court," Parker said. "Signing Kaleena as our first high school NIL women's basketball athlete is a pivotal moment for us as we lead in championing women's sports and building greater access to and representation in the game that we all love."
As part of the partnership, Adidas is sponsoring Smith's Ontario Christian high school team and AAU team as it joins the 3SSB Circuit.
The 2023-24 MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year is yet to decide where she will play collegiately, but she already has no shortage of offers from some of the best programs in the country.
This deal with Adidas will only add to Smith's national recognition as she takes the next step of her career.
