Pat Murphy of the Milwaukee Brewers and Stephen Vogt of the Cleveland Guardians are the 2024 National League and American League Manager of the Year winners.
Major League Baseball announced the winners Tuesday, and Murphy beat out fellow finalists Carlos Mendoza of the New York Mets and Mike Shildt of the San Diego Padres on the National League side.
As for the American League, Vogt prevailed over fellow finalists A.J. Hinch of the Detroit Tigers and Matt Quatraro of the Kansas City Royals.
All of the finalists had compelling cases, which made it such an intriguing race in both leagues.
Murphy wasted no time making an impact in his first managerial opportunity outside of a brief stint as the Padres' interim leader in 2015. He got the opportunity because Craig Counsell shockingly went to the rival Chicago Cubs last winter, which likely made Milwaukee's National League Central championship that much sweeter for the fans.
The Brewers finished 93-69 despite losing Counsell and ace Corbin Burnes before the season. What's more, All-Star Christian Yelich was limited to just 73 games because of a back injury, only adding to the adversity that Murphy had to fight through as manager.
Milwaukee still made the playoffs, although it lost in the Wild Card Series to Mendoza's Mets.
Like Murphy, this was Mendoza's first season as manager, and it included some adversity. New York was 11 games under .500 on June 2 before it caught fire and went 65-38 down the stretch to make the playoffs.
While this is a regular-season award, Mendoza's Mets continued to play well in the postseason and eventually reached the National League Championship Series before losing to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Shildt's Padres also lost to the Dodgers in the playoffs in the Division Series, but he still had an excellent first season as San Diego's manager. The team went 93-69, which was a continuation of the success he enjoyed as the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals from 2018 to 2021 when he went 252-199 and took home the 2019 NL Manager of the Year.
There was also a manager who found success in his first year at the helm on the American League side of things, as Vogt took over the Guardians from Terry Francona and led the team to an AL Central title at 92-69.
Following a legendary coach like Francona is no easy task, but he looked more than comfortable in the position and led Cleveland to the American League Championship Series.
He also outlasted Quatraro's Royals and Hinch's Tigers in the division. Both of those teams finished 86-76, which was good enough to make the playoffs after extended droughts for the two franchises.
Kansas City was an ugly 56-106 in 2023 but improved by 30 wins to reach the postseason for the first time since 2015. It was quite the turnaround and a testament to Quatraro's impact in just his second year as manager.
Detroit reached the playoffs for the first time since 2014 thanks to a red-hot closing stretch that saw it win 24 of its final 34 regular-season games. It defeated the Houston Astros in the Wild-Card Round and pushed Cleveland to five games in the Division Series in a tight battle.
All six managers impressed throughout the campaign, but it was ultimately Murphy and Vogt who took home the hardware.
