Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul: Tale of Tape, Fight Records and More for Both Boxers

Alex Ballentine

Months of anticipation have led to this. Jake Paul will meet Mike Tyson in the ring at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas in Netflix's first foray into live combat sports.

As far as influencer boxing goes, it doesn't get bigger than this. Paul will finally add a boxer with a real resume to his list of opponents. Granted, the boxer in question is a 58-year-old who hasn't had an official professional fight since 2005.

That's not going to slow down the hype for this event, though. Tyson, once known for his fearsome knockout power, is still one of boxing's most recognizable brands in the history of the sport.

Paul, a successful content creator, showman and developing fighter, will have the opportunity to add another massive payday to his name. He might even add a legendary boxer to his unique list of vanquished foes.

With Netflix streaming the fight without a pay-per-view price, there figures to be millions of viewers tuning in to watch the two stars fight.

Here's a look at how the two measure up with the Tale of the Tape, fight records and analysis for both fighters.

Height: 6'1"

Weight: 227.2 pounds

Reach: 76"

Record: 10-1 (7 KOs)

Jake Paul's weight is one of the interesting angles for this fight. He has typically fought right around the cruiserweight limit. His weight has typically ranged between 186-193 pounds and the fighters he has fought are usually accustomed to fighting at lower weights.

This will be a new experience for Paul fighting someone who is naturally bigger than him. There's only a one-pound difference in the weigh-ins but Tyson spent his entire career at heavyweight.

As for record, there's really no comparison. Paul's 10-1 mark was built while fighting fellow celebrities and stars from disciplines outside of boxing. Tyson was a legitimate heavyweight champion.

Weight: 228.4 pounds

Reach: 71"

Record: 50-6 (44 KOs)

Tyson's condititioning and health were a talking point leading up to this bout. After all, he's 58 years old and the first attempt at making this fight happen was scrapped due to Tyson suffering an ulcer flare up.

Tyson appeared to be in good health on the scale Thursday. He weighed in at 228.4 pounds which is actually 8.4 pounds heavier than his 2020 bout against Roy Jones Jr., but just about seven pounds less than the 233 pounds he weighed in his final professional fight against Kevin McBride.

Tyson's record of 50-6 includes memorable knockouts of Trevor Burbick and Larry Holmes. Of course, Tyson has a few famous losses too. His knockout loss to Buster Douglas is one of the biggest boxing upsets of all time and he famously bit off a piece of Evander Holyfield's ear resulting in a second loss to "The Real Deal".

Regardless, Tyson's losses were all against actual boxers so there's really no comparing their records.

Given that the fight is going to air for free for those who subscribe to Netflix and the name recognition of both fighters involved, this has the potential to be the most-watched boxing match of all time.

Depending on your perspective that's either a tragedy of the modern sports-entertainment landscape, an exciting opportunity to grow boxing or a little bit of both.

The odd matchup between a 58-year-old legend and a former YouTuber is a spectacle. The question is whether it will deliver an actual fight.

There are those who believe Tyson is going to humble Paul. Iron Mike is the first actual boxer that Paul is facing who was once a world champion and has a real boxing resume. Tommy Fury was the closest thing previous to this fight and he's still the lone loss on The Problem Child's resume.

Tyson Fury, Tommy's brother who happens to be named after Mike Tyson predicted that Iron Mike's power would bring him a victory in an appearance on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani.

"Listen, if Mike Tyson hits anybody, I don't care if he's 90, he's going to knock them out cold, isn't he?" Fury asked.

On the other side, YouTuber and fellow influencer-boxer KSI had a very different prediction for the fight.

That's where the fun in this matchup lies. There are two camps with wildly different thoughts and feelings on this matchup.

There's something to be said for experience. Paul will not even be close to the most talented fighter that Tyson has seen in his career. Tyson fought several former world champions in his heyday. Paul wouldn't touch the top 10 opponents that Tyson has shared a ring with.

Tyson, on the other hand, is the first former world champion that Paul has seen. Even at 58 years old the former champion brings unique challenges that Paul hasn't had to deal with based on his size and style.

Yet, there's a good chance that Paul is the victor on Friday night.

Tyson is going to find it hard to overcome the 31-year age gap. Just watching Tyson's 2020 exhibition fight with Roy Jones Jr. showed a fighter who was moving much slower than he did in his prime. The fight appeared to be in slow motion and Tyson didn't unleash a consistent offense.

Ultimately, this feels like a case of Paul picking the perfect opponent at the right time. His boxing career has been bereft of wins over actual, legitimate with the resume that comes with it.

Fighting Tyson gives him the opportunity to add one to his trophy case and earn some more credibility as an up-and-comer who can beat actual boxers.
