Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was named "Entertainer of the Year" by GQ for its new "Men of the Year" issue.

GQ's Zach Baron interviewed Johnson at a farm he owns in rural Virginia. The writer detailed how the 52-year-old successfully transitioned from pro wrestling to acting.

"Johnson is open about how he built what he built. His level of calculation and strategy is rare even for a leading man," Baron wrote. "Johnson says he used to pick release dates before he'd even shot movies, a role typically reserved for executives, who are paid to imagine when a movie might have the biggest impact. But Johnson—whose supernatural connection with his own audience dates back to his days in the WWE—found that he had a talent for knowing not just the projects his fans had a particular hunger for but also for the times they might be hungriest."

Johnson then elaborated on how that deliberate mindset also applied the movies he considered.

"I had this conceit and I idealized what my career should be," he said to Baron. "Audience first. Let's take care of the audience first. So I get a piece of material, I'd look at it and think, Okay, does this have four-quadrant capability and opportunity? Are audiences going to like seeing me in this role?"

In the profile, Baron brings up a report from The Wrap's Umberto Gonzalez about the production issues behind Red One, Johnson's new feature film that co-stars Chris Evans. Johnson showing up late to set and displaying a "lack of professionalism" was among the problems cited in the report.

The Rock called the resulting controversy "bulls--t," though he corroborated some details, such as arriving late on shooting days and peeing in bottles on the set.

Evans downplayed the extent to which the action star caused any friction behind the scenes and cited one example of Johnson's generosity.

The Red One cast and crew held a weekly raffle where the pot would total into the thousands of dollars. One day, Johnson decided to raise the total to around $20,000.

"And they pulled out a name and whoever won was losing it," Evans said to Baron before continuing the story. "Dwayne said, 'You know what? Should we do it again? How about 30 this time?' Everyone goes nuts. And then he says, 'You know what? How about one more?' And it was 50. I think on one Friday, Dwayne gave away something like close to a hundred thousand dollars."

In addition to his regular acting work, this past year saw The Rock return to his roots. He became a focal point in Cody Rhodes' ongoing feud with Roman Reigns and The Bloodline and wrestled in his first full match in 11 years at WrestleMania XL.

It probably wasn't the last WWE fans will see of "The Final Boss" inside the squared circle.
