WWE Rumors on Goldberg vs. Gunther, Drew McIntyre Injury; Corbin Feels WWE 'Fumbled'

WWE Still Working to Finalize Goldberg/Gunther Match

While the signs are pointing toward a confrontation between Goldberg and world heavyweight champion Gunther, WWE hasn't nailed down when it will happen, according to Wrestling Observer Radio's Dave Meltzer.

Meltzer reported (via Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News) that Goldberg needs time to work himself back into ring shape and that his match with Gunther isn't tentatively penciled in for WrestleMania.

Gunther seemingly sowed the seeds for this feud when he suggested to Bret Hart in September on Raw that Goldberg was his favorite wrestler. At the time, it looked like a subtle reference to Hart's longtime hostility toward his former WCW colleague more than anything else.

Then Goldberg showed up at Bad Blood and took exception to some pointed remarks from Gunther.

Goldberg subsequently announced Saturday he's retiring and lining up a farewell match in 2025. The identity of his opponent was implied:

If WrestleMania is off the table, then perhaps Goldberg vs. Gunther could be saved for SummerSlam. It's also the kind of match, since it would explicitly be a one-off featuring an outgoing legend, that would be a natural fit on a big show in Saudi Arabia.

McIntyre Taking Personal Time

Drew McIntyre suffered a serious laceration to his head during his Bad Blood loss to CM Punk. He shared a photo of the staples he received in his head to close the cut.

His ongoing absence from WWE programming goes beyond his recovery from that injury, though.

Fightful Select (via Steve Carrier of Ringside News) reported on Saturday that McIntyre is traveling abroad to meet with family.

In a post on Oct. 5, the former world champion said "the last few days have been really tough for me and my family personally." Days earlier, his brother John posted on X that their aunt had died.

The Fightful Select didn't provide a timeframe for when McIntyre might return to WWE television.

Corbin Agrees that WWE 'Fumbled' His Run

Baron Corbin confirmed Friday his time in WWE is over having having been signed to the company for 12 years, and he apparently has some thoughts about his exit.

One fan commented on an Instagram post from Corbin and asserted that "WWE fumbled the bag letting you go." The former U.S. champion responded to say he concurred:

There was a time when Corbin looked like he was a rising star. He was presented as a serious threat during his NXT run.

Over time, though, the 40-year-old simply failed to click despite the various changes to his on-screen persona.

In retrospect, unsuccessfully attempting to cash in the Money in the Bank briefcase against Jinder Mahal in 2017 was a serious blow to his overall momentum at the time. Following that with a loss to John Cena at SummerSlam only cemented the perception WWE didn't see him as a main eventer.

Corbin competed on some big shows but never again recaptured the attention that followed his initial MITB briefcase win.

By the end, his release didn't come as a big shock because he had been used so sparingly in televised matches.
