NFL Trade Deadline 2024: Date, End Time, Hottest Rumors, Predictions and More

Erik Beaston

With the beginning of November comes the NFL trade deadline, a time each season where contending teams in need of one more piece can work out deals with others (usually on the losing side of things) for star players in return for draft picks or role players.

That is no different in 2024, where a team like the Detroit Lions could look to make that one defining move that firmly entrenches them as the favorite to win the Super Bowl.

With just two days until the deadline, find out when teams have to make their bids and who might be swapping jerseys with this preview.

Date: Tuesday, November 5

Time: 4:00 p.m. EST

Teams have had since March 13 to make trades in the NFL, with some taking advantage of that window such as the Baltimore Ravens, who upgraded their already-explosive offense with the addition of Carolina Panthers wide receiver Diontae Johnson.

The Kansas City Chiefs added DeAndre Hopkins from Tennessee as another weapon for Patrick Mahomes to target in pursuit of a third, consecutive Super Bowl title.

The most notable recent trade was the addition of Davante Adams by the New York Jets from the Las Vegas Raiders.

It has not kick-started the Jets offense the way some had hoped but it did reunite Aaron Rodgers with his favorite receiver in hopes that even the 3-6 team can take advantage of a wide-open AFC.

Browns Receiving Calls on Za'Darius Smith

Za'Darius Smith is, arguably, the hottest potential trade target ahead of the deadline.

NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported that the Cleveland Browns have received numerous calls from teams about Smith, including the Detroit Lions. He also noted that the team could very well choose to hold onto the veteran pass rusher amid a base salary of just $1.21 million.

The Athletic's Dianna Russini confirmed reports that Detroit had checked in on Smith.

Smith has five sacks through eight weeks of the 2024 season and 47 sacks since 2019.

He has developed into one of the best and most respected ends in the league, so it is no wonder that a contending team with Super Bowl dreams and in need of a replacement for Aidan Hutchinson, like Detroit, would contact Cleveland about a potential deal.

While nothing has manifested to this point, he is likely the best player available at the deadline and someone who can be a legitimate difference maker.

It feels likely that he moves, especially if Cleveland drops Sunday's game at home against the Los Angeles Chargers.

Prediction: Smith heads elsewhere via trade, with Detroit being the most consistent potential landing spot

Rams to Retain Cooper Kupp?

Before the team's victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Week 8, the Los Angeles Rams were open to trading wide receiver and former Super Bowl MVP, Cooper Kupp.

Now, according to Russini, not so much.

It is not surprising. With Kupp on the field against Minnesota, the Rams had one of their most explosive offensive performances this season, with 386 total yards, 279 of them through the air.

Puka Nacua benefited and Demarcus Robinson caught two touchdowns.

Keeping Kupp on the roster, especially as the Rams enter their Week 9 match-up against Seattle at 3-4 and very much in contention for the NFC West lead, makes the most sense.

That does not mean teams will not still reach out in an attempt to wrest him away from the Rams. The Dallas Cowboys, for example, are a team that could use a complimentary receiver to CeeDee Lamb in hopes of opening up an offense that has under-performed.

Still, Kupp is still a favorite of quarterback Matthew Stafford and head coach Sean McVay. The idea of him leaving via trade, especially with the team still very much in the hunt, feels unlikely.

Prediction: Kupp stays in Los Angeles

Teams Reaching Out About Anthony Richardson

The Indianapolis Colts' decision to go with veteran Joe Flacco at quarterback over second-year player Anthony Richardson opened eyes around the league.

And phone lines.

Fox Sports NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that, "Teams have inquired with the Colts about the possibility of trading QB Anthony Richardson, who was benched this week, though a trade is considered unlikely."

It is not particularly surprising that teams would be interested in potentially adding a player that was drafted fourth overall from the University of Florida and has flashed the tools necessary to be a game-changing quarterback in the NFL.

Schultz continued his report, writing, "Several teams I spoke to still view Richardson as a franchise-caliber quarterback, and view Indy pulling the plug on him after 10 regular season starts as 'premature.'"

There has been no indication that the Colts are "pulling the plug" on Richardson and one would be hard-pressed to argue their decision to bench him based one what they have seen out of the QB this season.

Richardson has completed just 44.4 percent of his passes for 958 yards, four touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He currently carries a QB rating of 57.2, what feels like an eternity below the league average.

He has added just one score on the ground and missed two games with an oblique injury.

Richardson has only played in 10 games so there is an argument to be made that he has not had the chance to build any momentum or establish himself as the face of the Colts' future, but there were clearly enough signs in his play this year that warranted the team's decision to bench him.

Still, after just 10 games, it would be somewhat unheard of for the organization to give up on Richardson and send him packing elsewhere.

Yes, teams have called. No, he won't be departing Indy before Tuesday's deadline.

Prediction: Richardson stays put
