Buy or Sell Backstage Rumors on the Rock, Goldberg's WWE Crown Jewel Status and More

Chris Roling

Crown Jewel might not be the biggest landmark in the pro wrestling space right now regarding annual events, sure.

But it is pretty hard to ignore a rumor mill headlined by The Rock and Goldberg, anyway.

So it goes this time of year when WWE leads the way in terms of events by doubling up in November with Crown Jewel early in the month. Then, the company turns around and quickly builds toward Survivor Series: WarGames to close out a stacked month of PLEs (never mind AEW's Full Gear pay-per-view, too).

Given the emphasis on long-term storylines these days, the next few weeks will also play an important role in the build for Royal Rumble next year, which will lead right into the next WrestleMania.

Given the pace of things, here's a quick outline of the top rumors and buzz and whether fans should buy or sell on each.

The Rock's Schedule and Priorities

The Rumor

The Rock's ability to perform at WrestleMania understandably remains a point of speculation for fans. But according to Fightful Select (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats), WWE remains a "priority" for him.

Reaction

There would always be a lot of noise about whether Rock's Hollywood schedule would get in the way of WWE. His recent Bad Blood appearance on an entrance ramp to just nod menacingly before leaving again didn't help. But schedules are flexible and WWE wouldn't be beelining toward a family-based showdown at 'Mania with the likes of Roman Reigns if he wasn't going to be available.

Buy or Sell?

Easy buy. Rock's recent movies have been meh. He's literally invested in the well-being of WWE now as a member of the TKO board. And frankly, he's probably just straight-up having fun with his corporate heel persona that blurs the lines of reality. Of course, WWE is a priority.

Plans for Goldberg?

The Rumor

Since his interaction with Gunther, Goldberg rumors and speculation have run rampant in the mill. The latest, courtesy of PW Insider (h/t Ortman) reports that Goldberg won't be in Saudi Arabia for Crown Jewel, so there won't be an in-person advancement of the story.

Reaction

This one is like a tug-of-war. On the one hand, international shows occur at weird times for viewers in the United States, so it feels like WWE doesn't do anything major with them. Conversely, WWE might want to change that perception with title changes and story advancements. The overseas shows have pretty consistently trotted out legacy acts, too.

Buy or Sell?

Sell on the idea that the story won't get advanced. Maybe Goldberg isn't there in person. But the fact the report specifies "in-person" makes it feel like a promo or even interference via something like entrance music could play a role. WWE probably doesn't want Gunther or Cody Rhodes to take a clean loss. And matches like Randy Orton vs. Kevin Owens and the Bloodline feud say that WWE is plenty comfortable advancing stories overseas this year.

Rhea Ripley Injury Latest

The Rumor

A recent Rhea Ripley injury angle set the rumor mill aflame. PW Insider (h/t Ortman) first reported that the injury angle shot on NXT was to cover for a legitimate injury that would cost her time. Wrestling Observer Radio's Dave Meltzer (h/t Cain A. Knight of Cageside Seats) later said that Ripley suffered a fractured orbital bone and will miss time.

Reaction

WWE is usually pretty good about shooting proper injury angles when real life requires it, whether it's a legit injury, needed time off or something else. This is brutal timing for all involved, but that's how it goes in pro wrestling. Now, WWE will need to carefully navigate the story with Liv Morgan, Dominik Mysterio and Judgment Day for an unknown length of time.

Buy or Sell?

Buy on the injury angle as cover, injury and extended time away from in-ring action for Ripley. But there's the massive silver lining—the other Superstars in the angle are wicked talented and can make it work. WWE just produced the best feud of the last five or more years between CM Punk and Drew McIntyre while the former was on the shelf with an injury, so no reason to worry here.

Reaction to Breakker-Fatu Standoff

The Rumor

A recent standoff between Bron Breakker and Jacob Fatu earned massive reactions. According to WrestleVotes (h/t Ortman), WWE was caught off guard by the fan response to the simple staredown.

Reaction

Of course, these two had that type of reaction. Breakker is very blatantly the next big thing in WWE, and fans know it. With all due respect to Jey Uso, fans haven't seen him in a standoff on the main roster quite like this. Fatu, after all, has been the standout star of Solo Sikoa's Bloodline and feels like the next big thing in his own right.

Buy or Sell?

Sell. WWE isn't that silly. The company has to understand what it has in both guys and it has decades of experience understanding what happens when two seemingly unstoppable, hyped forces tease an encounter.

Roman Reigns Updated Plans?

The Rumor

Now that Roman Reigns appears to be on a redemption arc, the rumors have started to fly. According to Slice Wrestling, the current roadmap includes Reigns dismantling Solo Sikoa's Bloodline before eventually going on to defeat the Rock and get a title back around his waist.

Reaction

That's about as by the books as it gets, right? Reigns is finally that super-over babyface that WWE always wanted. He will hit on that redemption over a slow burn, slowly winning back his family and the likes of Sami Zayn. We'll probably get the corporate heel Rock as a big bad for him to overcome before he can get back to a more traditional pursuit of a title.

Buy or Sell?

Buy, which should prove that predictable doesn't have to be boring. It won't be easy for Reigns to admit his gaslighting ways were wrong. He has a long path to walk and plenty of Superstars, even outside his family, to convince. The path here should be super compelling and organic.
