LSU may have received a commitment from quarterback Bryce Underwood in January, but the Tigers still have competition for the top recruit in the Class of 2025.
Michigan has offered Underwood "a competitive NIL package on par with what LSU has presented," per On3's Pete Nakos.
Underwood is expected to earn approximately $5 million through NIL deals over three to four years in college, Nakos reported.
The Wolverines could be hoping to add a new top quarterback after cycling through three starters in eight games this season.
According to Nakos, Michigan sources say the push to acquire enough NIL funds to attract a new starting quarterback is "the most well-funded Michigan NIL operation since the NIL Era began in July 2021."
That push could include Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy, who said in September he would be willing to contribute up to $3 million to help the Wolverines acquire a top-10 quarterback. He reiterated earlier this month that he has spoken with Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore about a possible contribution.
Underwood has said multiple times that his main priority in choosing a college is to find a program that will prepare him for a professional football career.
"The development for me as a quarterback to prepare myself for the NFL is what mattered for me," Underwood said after his LSU commitment, per ESPN's Tom VanHaaren. "Also, having a relatable offense that I'm getting into is a big thing as well."
Given that former LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels and ex-Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy both went among the top-10 picks in the 2024 draft, both programs could now be making the arguments that they would be the best program to develop Underwood for the NFL.
He is in his senior high school season in Belleville, Michigan. He has recorded 1,477 passing yards for 19 touchdowns and one interception in seven games, while adding 24 carries for 427 yards and three touchdowns.
For Michigan, which turned back to Davis Warren for last weekend's win over Michigan State after benching him and giving starts to Alex Orji and the now-medically retired Jack Tuttle earlier this season, recruiting Underwood could add some certainty to a position that has been in flux since the departure of McCarthy.
