After dominating the conversation during the 2024 season with their incredible individual performances, Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani got a lot of love from their peers in the 2024 MLB Players' Choice Awards voting.
The New York Yankees superstar was voted Player of the Year and AL Outstanding Player, while Ohtani was voted as NL Outstanding Player.
The other notable winner was Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins being named Marvin Miller Man of the Year and Philanthropist of the Year. The Marvin Miller Award is given to the player for their efforts on the field and contributions to the community throughout the year.
This marks the second time in three years that Judge has been voted Player of the Year and AL Outstanding Player. He first won the award in 2022 when he tied the AL record with 62 home runs.
Judge put together the best season of his career in 2024. The 32-year-old set career-highs in batting average (.311), on-base percentage (.458) and slugging percentage (.701). He led MLB in the latter two categories, as well as homers (58) and RBI (144).
By Baseball Reference's wins above replacement, Judge's 10.8 mark is tied with Rogers Hornsby's 1921 season as the 21st-best season in MLB history.
Ohtani was voted Outstanding Player in his league for the third time after becoming the first player in MLB history with a 50-50 season. He previously won the AL Outstanding Player award in 2021 and 2023 while playing for the Los Angeles Angels.
The last AL player who wasn't Ohtani or Judge to be voted Outstanding Player by the MLBPA was José Abreu during his MVP season with the Chicago White Sox in 2020.
Atlanta Braves ace Chris Sale was the only player besides Judge and Hoskins to win two awards. He was voted the NL's best pitcher and Comeback Player of the Year. The 35-year-old started a total of 31 games over the previous four seasons with the Boston Red Sox.
After being traded to Atlanta last offseason, Sale turned in one of the best years of his career. He led MLB with 18 wins and a 2.25 ERA, while finishing first in the NL with 225 strikeouts. His 177.2 innings pitched were his most since 2017 (214.1).
Tarik Skubal joined Justin Verlander in 2011 and Max Scherzer in 2013 as the only Detroit Tigers pitchers to be voted AL Pitcher of the Year. The lefty had a breakout 2024 with a 2.39 ERA and 228 strikeouts in 192 innings to help the Tigers make the playoffs for the first time in 10 years.
