NBA Rumors: LeBron, Bronny James Likely to Make History 'Early' in Lakers vs. Wolves

The Los Angeles Lakers aren't going to wait very long into Tuesday's season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves to put LeBron and Bronny James on the court together.

Appearing on Tuesday's episode of SportsCenter, ESPN's Shams Charania said it's "very likely" that LeBron and Bronny will become the first father-son duo to play in an NBA game together "early" in the game:

"I'm told it's very likely, and the Lakers plan that LeBron James, Bronny James make history as the first father-son duo to be on the court at the same time, and likely to come early in the game as long as it's competitive and it's a flowing game as far as where the Lakers are at early on in that game. I think that's going to be very important. The Lakers want to allow this to happen during the flow of the game in a competitive environment. JJ Redick said on Monday that here is no plan finalized yet for both of them to play together on opening night, but this is something the Lakers have spent a lot of time discussing internally. It's never happened in the NBA before, may never, likely never happen again. You think about LeBron James in Year 22, he's really spoken this into existence. He's been talking about it for the last several years and now it is on the cusp of happening as soon as tonight."

LeBron and Bronny played together once in the preseason on Oct. 6 in the Lakers' 118-114 loss to the Phoenix Suns.

It seems like this has been the plan for some time, with Charania previously saying on Oct. 10 that the father-son duo could play together as soon as opening night.

If Lakers head coach JJ Redick follows the same plan he did in the preseason game against the Suns, Bronny's appearance could come at the start of the second quarter.

After playing sparingly off the bench in the first five preseason games, Bronny made his first career start on Oct. 18 against the Golden State Warriors. The Lakers rested their entire starting unit for that matchup, allowing the 20-year-old to play 35 minutes.

It was Bronny's most playing time in a game since he went into cardiac arrest in July 2023 prior to his freshman season at USC. He only played 30 minutes once in 25 games for the Trojans.

Bronny finished the game against the Warriors with 17 points, four rebounds and three steals.

"I think for him and all our younger players, all the moments are building blocks," Redick said after the game. "Not just the good moments. The bad moments are learning opportunities. I think you have to have a level of patience, a level of optimism. I'm very confident in the level of work that our young guys have had. So again, I think for him, I'm sure it felt good to have 17 points. ... I'm not even remotely concerned about that. It's not even on my radar. Like, we're trying to help him grow into a great basketball player."

LeBron has been talking about wanting to play with his Bronny for years. He told The Athletic's Jason Lloyd in February 2022 that his last year in the NBA "will be played with my son."

While there's no indication that the 2024-25 season will be LeBron's last in the NBA, it seems all but certain his dream of playing alongside Bronny is going to become a reality at some point on Tuesday night.

The Lakers will host the Timberwolves at Crypto.com Arena on Tuesday at 10 p.m. ET.
