Steelers Rumors: 'Most' Felt Fields Gave 'Best Chance to Win' over Russell Wilson

Despite leading the Pittsburgh Steelers to a 37-15 win over the New York Jets on Sunday night in his season debut, quarterback Russell Wilson still faced skepticism among those in the building according to Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer.

"Most folks in that building thought Justin Fields gave them the best chance to win. They still probably do," Breer wrote. "The problem was that if the Steelers stuck with Fields, that might've been it for Wilson as a Steeler."

The 13-season veteran started Sunday night's game on a shaky note, completing just 2 of 8 passes for 19 yards, fueling fans' belief that the Steelers should have stuck with Justin Fields at the QB position.

Wilson eventually turned his debut around, finishing the game with 16 completions on 29 attempts for 264 yards and two touchdowns.

The Steelers can still turn to Fields if they believe he's the better option at QB1, but it was clear to head coach Mike Tomlin and the front office that if Wilson hadn't played on Sunday, it could have marked the end of his time with the Steelers according to Breer.

Pittsburgh will continue to rely on Wilson next Monday when they face the New York Giants at home.
