CFB Playoff Picture 2024-25: Bracket Projections, Scenarios After Week 9 AP Rankings

Joe Tansey

The Oregon Ducks enter Week 9 of the college football season as the top team in the sport.

Oregon climbed up to the top spot in the latest AP Top 25 on Sunday, which puts it in line for the No. 1 seed in the College Football Playoff for now.

Oregon was joined by the Georgia Bulldogs in the club of teams with wins over top-five teams. UGA's reward for beating the Texas Longhorns was a three-spot move to No. 2 in the AP poll.

Georgia's victory shuffled around the order of playoff contenders in the SEC. The Texas Longhorns are now the clear No. 2 behind UGA in the SEC hierarchy.

The order of teams beneath Georgia and Texas might continue to change by the week. The Tennessee Volunteers are currently ahead of the LSU Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide. LSU will be in the spotlight in Week 9 with a road trip to face the Texas A&M Aggies.

The Group of Five hierarchy will be under a brighter spotlight on Friday, when the Boise State Broncos face the UNLV Rebels in a clash of Mountain West titans.

A Boise State win might lock up its status as the best G5 team, but a loss would open the door for the Army Black Knights and Navy Midshipmen.

Saturday SEC Results Shook Up Playoff Outlook

The SEC playoff outlook was altered once again on Saturday.

Georgia essentially cancelled out its loss to Alabama by beating Texas on the road and climbing back up to No. 2.

Kirby Smart's team still has a few hurdles to clear, though, before it can celebrate a playoff berth. UGA visits the Ole Miss Rebels on November 9 and then hosts Tennessee on November 16.

A 2-0 mark in those games would confirm UGA's spot in the 12-team field regardless of what occurs in the SEC Championship Game.

Texas has a tricky road trip to Nashville next week to face the Vanderbilt Commodores, but after that, it should manage its schedule with relative ease to have another potential shot at UGA in the conference title game.

Tennessee is not safe just yet because it still has the trip to Athens on its schedule, but even if it finishes with two regular-season losses, it should be in a decent spot to make the 12-team field.

Alabama is now in the most peril of the preseason SEC contenders because it has two losses and has two Top 25 clashes left on its schedule.

The Crimson Tide must beat the Missouri Tigers and LSU Tigers to get back into the playoff conversation. All hope is not lost yet for the Tide, but they do not have any margin for error.

LSU Is Team to Watch in Next Two Weeks

LSU has quietly moved its way into the Top 10 over the last few weeks.

Brian Kelly's team has hit its stride behind quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and it will have a chance to showcase itself on the national stage in Week 9 at Texas A&M.

The No. 8 team in the AP poll has one of the trickiest schedules to manage just to get into the playoff. The Tigers still have to play A&M, Alabama and Vanderbilt.

Saturday's clash at Kyle Field could turn into a playoff elimination game. A&M is also 6-1, but it still has to play Texas.

LSU gets Bama and Vandy at home in November, so if it finds a win to way in College Station on Saturday, it has a clear path to the playoff.

That is not something many people thought would happen after the Tigers dropped their season opener to the USC Trojans.

Boise State-UNLV Carries Huge Group of Five Implications

Boise State will put its position as the top Group of Five team on the line on Friday night in Las Vegas.

UNLV is the toughest opponent left on the Broncos' Mountain West schedule. A Week 9 victory would put Boise on the track to 11-1. Boise's only loss is to top-ranked Oregon in Week 2.

A handful of teams in other Group of Five leagues will be rooting for UNLV so that there's a more open race for the G5 automatic bid.

Army and Navy are the only other ranked teams at the G5 level going into Week 9. Navy has a chance to make a big splash on Saturday against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Army also plays Notre Dame on November 23.

If Boise and Navy both lose, keep an eye on the Memphis Tigers (6-1), Liberty Flames (5-0) as potential contenders along with UNLV and Army, who is off in Week 9, for the G5 berth.
