Kirby Smart Says Refs 'Tried to Rob' Georgia vs. Texas, Calls Out ESPN GameDay Hosts

Kirby Smart's Georgia football program isn't accustomed to being cast in an underdog role, and it responded in impressive fashion Saturday with a 30-15 road victory over Texas.

"Nobody gave us a chance," Smart said during his postgame interview on the ESPN broadcast. "Your whole network doubted us. Nobody believed us, and then they tried to rob us with calls, in this place. And these guys are so resilient."

Texas came into the game with an undefeated record and the No. 1 overall ranking, and the pressure was on the Bulldogs to bounce back after a loss to Alabama from earlier in the season. While the 12-team College Football Playoff provides more of a cushion, a second loss at this point of the year would have been troubling for Georgia.

Instead, the visitors jumped out to a 23-0 halftime lead, survived Texas winning the third quarter 15-0 and pulled away in the fourth quarter behind Trevor Etienne's third touchdown run.

It was notable Smart said all of ESPN doubted his team, as everyone on College GameDay picked the Longhorns to win except for Kirk Herbstreit. Herbstreit didn't make a pick for the game because he helped call the game, although he said at the end of the broadcast "it was all week talking about Texas."

The Georgia coach also called out the officials after a controversial sequence in the third quarter.

A defensive pass interference call wiped out the Longhorns' interception, and the Texas crowd responded by throwing water bottles and trash on the field. Yet officials eventually changed the penalty call and gave the home team the ball.

"I won't comment because I want to respect the wishes of the SEC office," Smart also told reporters after the game. "But I will say now we have a precedent that if you throw a bunch of stuff on the field and endanger athletes, that you've got a chance to get your call reversed."

The SEC's ensuing statement said, in part, "While the original evaluation and assessment of the penalty was not properly executed, it is unacceptable to have debris thrown on the field at any time."

Smart was not happy with the situation, but his team still battled through it and earned a critical win.
