NFL Insider: 'No World in Which Bill Belichick' Replaces Jeff Ulbrich as Jets HC

The Athletic's Dianna Russini believes there is no chance the New York Jets makes a second head coaching change this season, especially to hire former New England Patriots leader Bill Belichick.

"There is no world in which Bill Belichick winds up the 'HC of the NYJ' for a second time; he's made it pretty clear how he feels about the Jets and owner Woody Johnson," Russini wrote on Saturday.

Belichick was the Jets' head coach for one day in 2000 before he abruptly left in order to take the job with the Patriots. He reportedly announced his resignation with a note that said he resigned as "HC of the NYJ." Johnson's purchase of the team was announced about one week later.

The Jets currently are planning to give interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich "every chance" to earn the full-time head coaching role following the 2024 season, per Russini.

Ulbrich, who was previously the team's defensive coordinator, was promoted after Week 5 following the abrupt firing of former head coach Robert Saleh.

Johnson told reporters that he consulted with Jets general manager Joe Douglas about the decision to fire Saleh following the team's 2-3 start to the season, but took credit for the decision as his "alone."

Belichick recently criticized Johnson's head coaching choice in an appearance on the ManningCast broadcast on Monday Night Football.

"I'm not a big Jets fan, in case you don't know that. I like Fireman Ed, but that's it," Belichick told Peyton and Eli Manning. "Coach Saleh did a good job with that program. He brought in a culture, a level of toughness and competitiveness. … I thought Coach Saleh really did a good job with this team and they're probably not that far from winning."

Belichick added: "They've barely won over 30 percent in the last 10 years. The owner being the owner, just ready, fire, aim."

Belichick, 72, has undertaken multiple media projects including his ManningCast role since parting ways with the Patriots after 24 seasons in January, but ESPN's Adam Schefter reported in September that Belichick wants to return to coaching in 2025. If and when that return happens, it sounds like it will not be with Johnson and the Jets.
