Undisputed WWE champion Cody Rhodes defeated world heavyweight champion Gunther at Crown Jewel in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on Saturday to win the first-ever WWE Crown Jewel Championship.
The two men battled it out in a hard-fought, back-and-forth affair, and Rhodes ultimately came out on top after reversing Gunther's sleeper hold into a pinning combination.
During last month's Bad Blood premium live event, WWE head of creative Triple H revealed that for the first time in company history, its top champions would face each other for special titles at Crown Jewel.
That meant that in addition to the WWE women's champion and women's world champion facing off, the WWE champion and world heavyweight champion would meet with the grandiose Crown Jewel Championship on the line.
During Triple H's unveiling of the titles, Gunther interrupted and announced his intention to cement himself as the top wrestler in WWE by winning in Saudi Arabia.
However, The Ring General had a major challenge to contend with before even getting to Crown Jewel, as he had to defend the World Heavyweight Championship against Sami Zayn on the Oct. 7 episode of Raw.
Zayn became one of the few Superstars in WWE to have defeated Gunther back at WrestleMania 40 in April when he beat him for the Intercontinental Championship, thus ending his historic reign.
Zayn aimed to do something similar on Raw, but Gunther made him pass out in a sleeper hold, thus punching his ticket to Crown Jewel.
Once Gunther vs. Rhodes was made official, they addressed each other in the ring on the Oct. 14 edition of Raw. Although the atmosphere felt contentious, the two men expressed respect for each other.
The Austrian did get a reaction out of The American Nightmare by calling him a "secondary champion," but they still shook hands at the conclusion of the conversation.
Rhodes and Gunther aimed to prove who was truly the better wrestler at Crown Jewel, and by virtue of his victory, The American Nightmare can now stake claim to that title.
