NFL Rumors: Jayden Daniels Using A.I. Program to Help with 'Quick Decision-Making'

Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has trained with a virtual reality headset displaying AI-based game simulations during his rookie NFL season, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Daniels also used the program, created by a Germany-based company called Cognilize, during his Heisman Trophy-winning 2023 season at LSU, as previously reported by Alec Lewis for The Athletic.

The quarterback has since brought the program into the NFL, where the Commanders "might be the only team in the league with the program," Fowler wrote.

Cognilize, which was founded in 2019 as a soccer training program, bills itself on the company's website as "immersive decision-making training for athletes," which allows "enhancing of split-second reads" and "more reps in high-pressure environments."

The football version of the program works by projecting "an on-field setting from the perspective of the quarterback" in a VR headset, according to Lewis.

The program then simulates plays, which occur as fast or faster than real game action, Lewis wrote.

Lewis reported that the LSU football program sent the developers of the program a variety of different Tigers plays and coverages the team might face, so that the VR could create situations Daniels was likely to encounter in real games.

"It's our playbook. You get to go against the defensive looks, starting coverages, and stuff like that... It helped out a lot, just to go and get more mental reps outside of practice and stuff like that, more physical reps," Daniels told WAFB's Jacques Doucet about the program during his senior season at LSU.

Fowler's report did not specify whether the Commanders have offered similar information.

Whatever training Daniels has been doing this season appears to be succeeding as the 23-year-old paces the NFL with a 75.3 completion percentage through six games. He has passed for 1,404 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions, while adding 322 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, while leading the Commanders to open the season with a 4-2 record.
