4 Fights We Need to See After UFC Fight Night 244

Tom Taylor

UFC Fight Night 244 wasn't a blockbuster on paper, but it set the stage for some great fights in some of the promotion's best divisions.

Saturday's card in Las Vegas was headlined by a flyweight contest between No. 1 contender Brandon Royval and the previously unbeaten Tatsuro Taira. It was a close fight, but in the end, the American defended his top spot with a dubious split-decision victory over the Japanese contender.

In the co-main event, South Korea's Park Jun-yong picked up one of the biggest victories of his career, defeating Brad Tavares with a split-decision win of his own.

Park and Royval were the biggest winners of the night, but former lightweight contender Grant Dawson also impressed with a big stoppage win over Rafa Garcia.

Keep scrolling for the fights we'd like to see next for Royval, Park and Dawson, as well as our pick for Taira's next matchup.

Brandon Royval vs. Pantoja-Asakura Winner

Brandon Royval's win over Tatsuro Taira was close, but it was impressive nonetheless and pushed him onto a two-fight streak after another split-decision win over former champ Brandon Moreno.

After the win, the 32-year-old is clearly the flyweight division's No. 1 contender, and he deserves a shot at the belt. Unfortunately for him, though, the next crack at Alexandre Pantoja's title will go to former Rizin Fighting Federation bantamweight champ Kai Asakura.

The Japanese fighter, 30, will be making his UFC debut in the clash at UFC 310 on December 7. No matter who wins, Royval should be the next man in line for the victor. And while he'd probably be an underdog against both, his recent wins over Moreno and Taira prove he should not be counted out against anyone.

The Denver native could be our flyweight world champ by this time next year.

Tatsuro Taira vs. Kai Kara-France

Tatsuro Taira suffered his first career loss on Saturday night in Vegas, but it wasn't a decisive defeat, and at 24, he clearly has all the time in the world to bounce back.

Our pick for his next fight is Kai Kara-France.

The New Zealand fighter, 31, is riding a blistering knockout win over former title challenger Steve Erceg. And were it not for Royval's recent run and the UFC's signing of Asakura, he would probably be next for a crack at Pantoja.

Unfortunately for Kara-France and his fans, he's going to need to take at least one more fight before he gets his long-desired crack at the undisputed belt, and a clash with a guy such as Taira seems the perfect choice.

The winner would be firmly in title contention, and it would probably be an excellent fight, as there are a ridiculous 27 stoppage wins between the pair.

Book it for a Fight Night main event or a pay-per-view main card.

Park Jun-yong vs. Joe Pyfer

Park Jung-yong may never be a serious title threat at middleweight, but after 11 fights in the Octagon, the "Iron Turtle" has proved he is UFC-caliber.

The South Korean's latest win came against Hawaiian veteran Brad Tavares on Saturday's main card, and it helped separate him from a close decision loss to Andre Muniz last year.

At this point, Park is close to the outer edge of the middleweight top 15, but it still seems a bit early to give him a ranked foe. Instead, it seems logical to match him up with another fighter on the rise, such as Joe Pyfer.

The American, 28, is known for his ridiculous knockout power and was one of the most hyped fighters in the UFC heading into 2024, but he ended up suffering a lopsided loss to Jack Hermansson in his first fight of the year.

Pyfer has since rebounded with an impressive knockout of durable Canadian Marc-Andre Barriault, and a fight with Park would tell us a lot about where he belongs in the weight class.

It's got Fight Night co-main event written all over it. Book it.

Grant Dawson vs. Jalin Turner

For a while, Grant Dawson looked like he could be a future title challenger or even champion at lightweight. Then, in October 2023, he suffered a shock knockout loss to King Green that totally derailed his momentum.

Dawson is now firmly back on track, though.

In June, the 30-year-old bounced back from his loss to Green with a decision win over Joe Solecki, and he made it two in a row on Saturday with a first-round stop of Rafa Garcia.

From here, it's fair to start talking about him as a serious contender again. He deserves a ranked opponent, and our choice is the No. 14-ranked Jalin Turner.

Turner, 29, is riding a stoppage loss to Renato Moicano—which he nearly won by knockout himself—but remains one of the most serious knockout threats in the weight class, as he proved with a stoppage of Green late last year.

A fight between Dawson and Turner looks exciting on paper, and the winner would arguably deserve a fight with a top-10 lightweight.
