It isn't quite WrestleMania season yet in the pro wrestling realm, but that won't stop the rumor mill from spitting out 'Mania buzz about main events and names like The Rock, Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns.
Impressive from the mill, really, considering WWE has two landmark events coming up in November. First is the 2024 edition of Crown Jewel in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on November 2, then Survivor Series: WarGames on November 30.
In addition to 'Mania buzz, the rumor mill has some other standard stuff to say, like WWE reactions to major storyline developments and what sort of matches might slot into those November events.
Here is a look at the most notable buzz as of late, plus whether fans should buy or sell on each.
WWE Loved the Rhodes vs. Owens Drama
WWE got innovative yet again in its presentation and continued to push the boundaries of expectation when Kevin Owens jumped Cody Rhodes off camera after Bad Blood.
According to Fightful Select (h/t Randall Ortman of Cageside Seats), those within the company loved how real the whole situation looked.
Easiest buy of the week. Bad Blood faded to black, and then suddenly, an outburst of social media posts showing Owens beating down Rhodes by the busses outside the stadium was a stroke of sheer genius.
It helps that Owens' motivations feel organic, as he's peeved that Rhodes has willingly worked with Roman Reigns. But this felt more like a street fight where the recipient of the assault took real damage than a scripted wrestling backstage segment. That included only cellphone footage capturing the whole thing, blending the lines between real and fake perfectly.
Verdict: Buying
Triple Threat at 'Mania?
WWE has a complex problem on its hands once again with Rock, Rhodes and Reigns likely involved in 'Mania main events next year.
One rumor, though, hints WWE might take the easy way out.
According to WrestleVotes (h/t Ortman), WWE has the idea of a triple-threat match "on the table" right now.
WWE will obviously spitball plenty of ideas between now and the 'Mania kickoff show. But the idea of a triple threat just feels like a major sell.
Yes, a triple threat could help along a veteran part-timer like Rock. But next year's 'Mania needs more than that. There is plenty of time to long-term book specific main events, such as Reigns and Rock settling their family business once and for all while Rhodes takes on someone like say, Randy Orton?
A triple threat feels like a shaky idea, especially because it would probably ask the shaky alliance between Rhodes and Reigns to keep up for far longer than it should just to reach 'Mania.
Verdict: Selling
Big Crown Jewel Rematch?
It turns out fans potentially haven't seen the last of Jey Uso and Bron Breakker getting together to squabble over the Intercontinental title.
According to The Wrestling Observer (h/t Ortman), that match is on the docket for Crown Jewel next month.
This is a buy of a rumor simply because WWE needs to flesh out the Crown jewel card with an interesting blend of ongoing and spontaneous stuff to fit the overseas event.
That said, a rematch so soon and at that specific PLE would make the end result pretty predictable. WWE doesn't do a ton of title changes in Saudi Arabia and Breakker winning the belt back so soon would make his losing it in the first place silly and likely harm Jey in the process.
So, while predictable, it's also a buy.
Verdict: Buying
Rhea Ripley Contract Buzz
One constant of the pro wrestling rumor mill is contract buzz, whether it's the matter of free agents or big names in need of extensions.
In this case, it's the latter with WWE and Rhea Ripley.
According to PW Insider (h/t Ortman), Ripley has a new five-year extension, which classifies as a "significant pay increase."
Easy buy, seeing as there wouldn't be much reason for this news to hit the rumor mill in the first place. Ripley is one of the top women's stars on the planet and has been one of the driving forces behind one of the sport's top non-Bloodline storylines for what feel like ages now.
Any supposed pay uptick is both expected and deserved and WWE would be foolish not to get an extension done.
Verdict: Buying
Bobby Lashley Update
Bobby Lashley joining AEW feels inevitable.
More interesting than whether the former WWE juggernaut will actually join AEW is when it might happen.
According to Ibou of WrestlePurists (h/t Ortman), Lashley will make his anticipated debut at the WrestleDream event. From the sounds of the report, the schedule actually shifted and slowed the pace of things down, as Lashley was even originally expected to wrestle at the show.
Regardless, it's an easy buy. MVP debuted not all that long ago, then introduced Shelton Benjamin as an addition. That left just one piece of the stable formerly known as Hurt Business in need of a debut—and he happens to be the biggest piece of all.
Verdict: Buying
