The final third of the calendar year traditionally brings the first reports and rumors surrounding WrestleMania and what matches may headline The Showcase of the Immortals, and 2024 is no different.
A potential blockbuster showdown could headline WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas, according to reports.
The latest on a potential main event for The Show of Shows on April 19-20 headlines this collection of insider updates, which also includes a championship clash slated for Crown Jewel and news on Daniel Garcia re-signing with All Elite Wrestling.
Latest on WrestleMania 41 Main Event
WrestleVotes reported on their Q&A podcast that WWE has floated the idea of a Triple Threat match for the Undisputed WWE Championship at WrestleMania 41 that would feature Cody Rhodes, The Rock and Roman Reigns.
That is about as star-studded a contest as it gets in WWE, with the two top babyfaces in the company and an internationally recognized megastar vying for the top prize in the industry.
It also links back to a story that began at WrestleMania 40, with Rock defeating Rhodes in the Saturday night tag team match before The American Nightmare overcame adversity and finished his story by defeating The Tribal Chief the following night.
Add in the expected hostility between Rock and Reigns that exists from their battle over The Bloodline and the fact that a three-way match protects the former from having to work a long-form main event by himself, and you have a bout that more than makes sense.
Rock returned at the conclusion of Bad Blood on Saturday, standing at the top of the ramp and staring down both of his prospective opponents before making a throat-slashing gesture and walking away.
Who that was directed at and what direction the story takes from here remains to be seen, but there is at least a logical path to the reported main event.
Cody Rhodes Merchandise Update
Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select reported that Rhodes did not top merchandise sales in Atlanta for Bad Blood.
Instead, "first place spot went to "WWE/Bad Blood" which means WWE or Bad Blood branded merchandise that also includes title belts."
The American Nightmare finished No. 2, which is still an incredible achievement considering he was the top-selling Superstar of the weekend, something he has been for most of 2024.
It is a testament to Rhodes' star power and the connection he has forged with fans as the lead babyface on WWE programming.
The return of Reigns has tested that, but Rhodes has remained neck-and-neck with The OTC in crowd reaction and, according to Sapp's report, topped his sales in Atlanta.
Whether that is sustainable as Reigns continues to build momentum in his new role is open to question.
For now, though, Rhodes remains the top dog in terms of merchandise sales, overall popularity and champion of the SmackDown brand.
Jey Uso vs. Bron Breakker Expected for Crown Jewel
Bron Breakker showed respect for Jey Uso a week after he lost the Intercontinental Championship on the Sept. 23 edition of Raw.
That respect was short-lived as Breakker attacked the champion on Monday's Raw, laying him out with two Spears in a move that announced he was coming back for the title.
Dave Meltzer reported on Wrestling Observer Radio that Uso vs. Breakker is expected for the Crown Jewel event (h/t Eric Mutter of Wrestling Inc).
Creatively, the angle felt out of place. A week earlier, Breakker shook Uso's hand and appeared to insinuate he would be chasing Gunther and the World Heavyweight Championship from there.
The sudden about-face suggests there was a reconsideration or something that came up to change Triple H and the writing team's minds. That, or there was a sudden need to beef up the card with Uso's star power or another title match.
Whatever the case, Breaker's babyface run appears to have been put on ice and a rematch with Uso is now on tap.
Update on Daniel Garcia Re-Signing With AEW
Daniel Garcia revealed Tuesday night on AEW Dynamite that he has re-signed to the company.
Sapp noted: "He's factored in to significant creative plans moving forward, we're told."
WWE was previously interested in signing Garcia, but he opted to continue his career with AEW. It is not necessarily difficult to see why, either.
Despite some questionable creative decisions during his time with the Jericho Appreciation Society, the 26-year-old has long been presented as a star of wrestling's future.
As one of the best pure, technical professional wrestlers in the business, AEW has always given him a platform to showcase his talents.
His style meshes well with various others on the roster, and he has shown an ability to fire up and be an effective babyface, as evidenced in his recent rivalry with MJF.
Garcia has the tools necessary to be a main event star and, according to Sapp, AEW is prepared to allow him to be just that.
