UFC's Dustin Poirier Suggests 4-Man 'BMF' Tournament with Gaethje, Holloway, Hooker

UFC veteran Dustin Poirier has an interesting suggestion for his retirement fight that would pit him against some of the most exciting fighters in the promotion.

While speaking on MMA Today on SiriusXM, Poirier suggested a one-night, four-man tournament for the symbolic UFC BMF championship.

"Now that excites me," Poirier said (h/t Jed Meshew of MMA Fighting). "Because that kind of stuff is for the dogs. That's like old Pride days or Grand Prix. That's a real 'BMF.' If you can fight a tournament in one night, multiple opponents, that's the definition of 'BMF.'"

When asked about the potential participants in the tournament, Poirier said, "[Justin] Gaethje, [Dan] Hooker, and Max [Holloway], maybe. That's a bloodbath. Do it on Friday the 13th."

The UFC has not hosted a one-night tournament since UFC 23 in 1999, so it's unlikely that Poirier's wish would come true. However, he views that dream as the perfect way to end his storied career.

"That would be it," Poirier added. "If they put that together and it was a one-night tournament, that would be it."

Holloway currently holds the BMF title after defeating Gaethje with a dramatic fifth-round knockout at UFC 300. Gaethje previously defeated Poirier by second-round knockout to win the vacated title at UFC 291, avenging a 2018 knockout loss to Poirier and tying their series 1-1.

Poirier defeated Hooker in a "Fight of the Night" performance in 2020 and also holds two wins over Holloway, one of which was for the UFC interim lightweight championship.

Poirier has been contemplating retirement since losing to UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev in the main event of UFC 302 in June. The 35-year-old said he still believes he can compete at the highest level, but after 40 career fights, he's ready to step away from MMA due to the physical toll it's taken on him.

"Realistically, I probably have five, six [fights left]," Poirier said. "But I'm not going to do that to my body. Here I'm about to have another nose surgery. What if I come back and crack it again? We've just got to see. It's one fight at a time. But I definitely want to do one, and especially if there's a possibility to come home and do it in Louisiana, that's where I'd love to lay the gloves down."

Poirier said that he's spoken to the UFC about a fight card in New Orleans for sometime next year, so perhaps he will get at least a part of his wish for his retirement fight. However, UFC president Dana White sounded open to the tournament idea when asked about Poirier's pitch following Tuesday's episode of Dana White's Contender Series.

"Sounds fun," White said. "Never thought about it but yeah, I love it."
