Video: UFC's Jon Jones Trains with Olympic Gold Medalist, Ex-WWE Star Gable Steveson

UFC heavyweight champion Jon Jones enlisted the help of Olympic gold medalist and former WWE wrestler Gable Steveson as he trains for his comeback fight against Stipe Miocic.

Video footage was released on Tuesday showing Jones and Steveson sparring on the mat.

Jones and Miocic were originally scheduled to headline UFC 295 at Madison Square Garden in November 2023, but Jones had to withdraw after suffering a torn pectoral muscle in training two weeks before the bout.

Rather than put Miocic in with a different opponent and potentially risk him losing, which would have cost him a future shot against Jones, UFC put Tom Aspinall and Sergei Pavlovic on the MSG card for the interim heavyweight title.

Aspinall won the bout and successfully defended the interim crown earlier this year against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304.

UFC president Dana White announced on Sept. 14 that the long-awaited Jones-Miocic fight has been signed for UFC 309 at Madison Square Garden, but he wouldn't confirm if the winner would challenge Aspinall to unify the title.

"Jon Jones is going to fight [Stipe Miocic] in Madison Square Garden in November," White said. "And then if he wins or Stipe wins, we see what happens next."

Steveson is a perfect training partner for Jones going into his upcoming fight. The 24-year-old won the Olympic gold medal in wrestling in the 125 kg weight class at the 2020 Games. He had a brief stint in WWE as the company's first-ever NIL signee in September 2021.

It wasn't until 2023 that Steveson wrestled a match in WWE, fighting to a count out draw with Baron Corbin at the NXT Great American Bash. He did work some NXT house shows and dark matches for the remainder of the year before being released in May.

Miocic comes from a wrestling background, including competing at the 2003 NCAA Championships when he was at Cleveland State. The 42-year-old hasn't fought since losing to Francis Ngannou in a heavyweight title bout at UFC 260.

A two-time UFC heavyweight champion, Miocic holds UFC records for most wins in title fights (six) and most consecutive title defenses (three). He has a 20-4 overall record in mixed martial arts, including a 14-4 mark in UFC.

Jones hasn't fought since defeating Cyril Gane at UFC 285 in March 2023 to win the vacant heavyweight title. The bout was his first in three years and marked his debut in the 265-pound division.
